It's very heavy and came from Massachusetts:

It's not oak. There's no "flecking" in that piece he has, which is characteristic of oak.

Might be a type of hickory, if it really is heavy. I can't say for sure what it is.
 
With the color in the center and the rest of the wood looks light it may be box elder.If the small branches are green and shiney it is most likely box elder which is heavy when green and loses much weight when dried.Split a piece and show the grain for a better chance to id.:chainsaw:
 
i still think it looks like cherry,, especially 2nd & 3rd pics,,, i just picked some up this morning, and split and stacked it,,, take a pic of it split, if you can,,,
