Old guy sounds like a thief to me or has a bad case of alhiemers. Even parking far away seems suspicious. The old man staring in the truck on the highway and then out of curiosity walks to the truck and pics up the saw.

You dont just walk up to peoples trucks and pick up their equipment, esp a chainsaw, hell even my little niece knows that.

I respect all elders, but they can be thiefs too.
Its hard to say how I would have reacted but I dont blame your buddy for doing what he did. Maybe he used a little bit more force but if I suspect somebody trying to steal from me then my adrenaline really gets pumping and its hard to stop it.

I bet that guy will think twice before picking up others things without permission.

Does that mean you arent going to come down here for a visit?Ah, come on man, the cuttin is good, plenty of white oak laying around.Shoot, I even have a guest house you can shack up in!Aint really worried about a little black cloud are you?

Hmm,never thought THIS topic would turn into an AVALANCHER bashing party.
And I thought I was nothing more than an innocent bystander!

Misfortune?Nope, I consider myself one of the luckiest guys around.Never been seriously injured, never sick(cant remember the last time I took a sick day)got a great wife, great daughter, make friends where ever I go.Good truck, nice shop, good saws, and a few pennies in the bank.A guy cant ask for any more.Least, I dont anyway. When I die, it will be with a smile on my face.

Shoot i'd hang out with ya avalancher, not skeered of no damm bad mojo.

Lets make this real easy!!!
You pick anything out of my truck bed to "look-at" without my blessing & I'll beat you to death!
It always seems funny how some folks will stand up for criminal activity by saying "They didn't mean anything by it" :dizzy:

Stealing is wrong - no question about that, but the same results could have been obtained with a simple, "What do you think you're doing?" No reason to get physical with the guy.

Sounds like the old coot is suffering from some kind of early dementia. Let's hope that when some of us start doing the same kinds of things, others will have a little more patience with us.

The latest chapter in "The Strange but True Adventures of Avalancher."

You must've pissed off a gypsy or walked under some awful kind of ladder. Misfortune seems to tail you like a dingleberry on a short n curley leash. Some bad, bad hoo-doo stuck to you like Rosie O'Donnell's spandex after a visit to Curves.

And its apparently contagious, affectling all those you come in contact with like a case of some bovine flu!

Solitary confinement is the only option for you unless you have absolutely zero regard for those whom you hold dear and the greater good of all humanity.

Dare I say it? It is the ----boy Curse! I am so sorry it couldn't be helped! LMAO!

I won't take anything out of the bed of a pickup but I must confess to the garbage donation complex. I walk past a truck with a bunch of trash in the bed and I happen to have a popcan, banana peel, soda cup, etc. it gets donated. Includes my own truck. I have gone to do estimates, park at the curb, see some garbage, and toss it in my bed. Got me one job I know of for sure cuz the lady sayed so afterwards.

ya' need somthin like this for having saw in back of the truck.

i got this idea from a saw holder during the fire the guy had 5 044/046 in the back of a t100 with them over laced like this

In the paper the other day was a story about a disagreement or arguement that went a little overboard. One punch was thrown. The guy that took it hit his head on the curb, he's dead. The guy that threw it is in jail for manslaughter. Two families torn apart because of someones temper or pride.

you guys did right. every one knows early on in life that you don't touch another's stuff....especially in a parking lot. i think the old man was b/s-ing you. if he really wanted to look at that saw, since he was following you, why didn't he just pull up and ask when you got there?

regardless of age, i don't wouldn't trust anyone.

but, i do have a question.....how "old" was this guy? lol....i'm 58.

Exactly.

It does seem odd that he would be so obvious and at the same time it is just as odd that he wouldn't know better. It is possible that he has mental issues too.

Did your friend over-react, maybe. The good ole days of fist fights were happy times, we now live in a much different world where the repercussions can be life changing.

Too bad, it would have got real interesting if you two had stood in that doorway just a couple minutes and watched what was about to unfold. Don't take it wrong, I would react quite quickly if someone touched anything I own.

If I saw somebody with a nice saw I might say something to them and shoot the #### about saws, but going over to someone's vehicle and taking their saw out is a bit shady.

Well said, I will talk saws with anyone, at length. But to take it out of the truck without the owner present or spoken too is beyond shady, it's wrong. I learned as a child, that without someones permission you look with your eyes only....

I don't know that I'd have tackled the old man, but he would certainly be detained untill he could successfully explain his way out of it, and if I didn't buy it the Police would be on the way.

I agree. I would not have touched the old man but if his story wasn't pretty damn good I would call the police. I probably would have called the police anyway and reported the man and his tag number. He may have a history.

There, that's a good idea. Have the police call him in, if he doesn't have any priors he must just be ignorant or demented.

This is a tough call, on one hand you feel sorry for the guy if is marbles have rolled away from the bag....on the other hand you don't want to see a thief walk away unpunished.

We may never know.

Its hard to know what to do when tempers flare, eh?
Truth be known, i really dont know what I would have done if it had been my property.Im just glad nobody got hurt or ended up in the clink.

The man should not have picked up the saw without the owner's permission. No doubt about that.

At the same time you say that you live in an area where theft is not common, so with that taken into consideration, your friend may have overreacted a bit. Sure he should have confronted the man, but not wrestle him to the ground right off the bat.

Perhaps the good that can come out of this would be. Do not leave expensive equipemnt in plain sight and unlocked.

That will render a similiar situation impossible.

I live in an area where crime is not a big problem, but I still don't want strangers to even know what is in my truck, let alone have free access to it.
:greenchainsaw:

Like I said before young criminals do grow into old criminals. And they think up excuses, stories before hand. Wake up Grandpa was geting ready to trade your saw for Viagras and a night with some trailer queen named Frieda Mae. JMO....

No doubt it was a pretty fishy deal with the old man grabbing the saw. I would have confronted him, but not physically. I don't think it is worth that. There are a lot of variables like what you all pointed out. What if the old man had a gun?

Every time I do something that I did not like how it turned out...I go over it in my mind later and try to remember what I should do when the same type of circumstance happens again. That's how you learn to stop making the same mistakes over and over.

Avalanche, I'm glad you stopped your friend from letting loose on the old guy. You are a good friend to Chad and looked out in his best interest. That's what friends do.

I think if you have a load of saws and stuff in the truck bed, there's probably not much place to put oily large saws like that inside the truck, locked up. Maybe a chain and combo lock thru the handles and onto the truck bed is the way to go. At least it would slow someone down when doing a quick grab.
