First, 2-stage pumps do not kick into low gear.

2-stage log splitter pumps have 2 separate sections that are pumping all the time. The two sections run on the same shaft except that one section has a by-pass.

Example; a 16 gpm 2-stage pump has a 12 gpm section with a by-pass valve and a 4 gpm section that with no by-pass. The 12 gpm section will pump into the system until pressure reaches the by-pass setting between 600 - 800 psi then fluid from this section goes back to the inlet.
The 4 gpm section continues to pump fluid into the system regardless of pressure. If there is no relief on the system the engine will stall or the pump will break. The 12 gpm section is designed for high flow/ low pressure and the 4 gpm section is designed for low flow/ high pressure.

If pressure stops at 600 -800 psi the low flow /high pressure section is damaged.

Does the ram extend until it hits the wood and then stop? When mine did
that it was only low on fluid. Check the tank.....Lanny
