Granny - Can you find the Sears model number anywhere on the saw. It will likely start out with 358. or 917.
I don't know anything about your saw but I suspect the knob on the side would be to operate the self sharpening mechanism and the screw on top is a limit so the stone does not move too far. None of that really matters to you now since the chain has been changed over to a conventional chisel type cutter you need to sharpen with a round file.
