Meka is a timberwolf/husky mix and she pulls like freight train and loves it too. I've had her tow me on ski's many times and she does that with no problem (225 lbs) What type of a harness are you using?

the harness Im using is a leather tracking/pulling harness from fordogtrainers.com

I wish I would have bought the icelandic pull harness from blackice.com

I've been wanting to do that same thing with our GSD! Just haven't gotten around to picking up a harness. That's gotta be fun to see and great way to tire 'em out!

I was just joking about that with my girlfriend last weekend out in the woods...we have 8 dogs, three germain shepards...the paralized one in a cart isn't going to pull much but I'm picturing about 4 of them with a sled behind them like a sleding team :)

Please be careful. I hate to sound like sour grapes, but a dog will pull until its lungs burst or it vomits all over the place. It will do this because it loves you and is trying to please you and it does not know its own limits.

That's why sled dogs are usually trained working breeds, such as Alaskan malemutes and Siberian huskies, and the sled operator usually knows the limits they can withstand. The dogs operate as a team with a lead dog controlling the pace for the rest.

Your dog is probably strong as an ape and healthy as a horse, but in all sincerity, please try to understand where I am coming from. BTDT.

Trust me, I understand. Shepherds are good working dogs, and she does pretty well. She is well trained, and thats why she picked this up as quickly as she did.

Ive caught some "hell" in this thread, and I couldve went back out and had her do it some more just to get some pics, but I know that's not what is best for her and the "process."

That said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with a GSD with good lines pulling a few loads of wood. Its good for her, and gives her a purpose. I know her limits.

It seems like I post this picture every winter when the subject comes up so here it is again. My St.Bernard with his pulling harness and a sled load of wood. He needs something to do in the winter because our other dogs dont enjoy the cold weather as much as Trooper does, so they stay indoors, and he gets bored being outside alone. So, like most dogs, he enjoys lending a hand to his master.

My Golden, Samson just likes to carry one piece of firewood at a time, usually from the woodpile not to it! What do you guys use, a modified chest harness? I am really thinking it woulkd be fun for him to pull our 4 yr old on his sled!

this really isn't related but I usually have to shoo them away while I'm splitting wood. (cause you know, the fresh split splinters taste the best). I've had to stop in mid swing more than once. I presume they figure no harm can come to them if I'm around. The Dane (bless her sweet heart) is dumb as a post but I expect better from the Labrador

Chainsaw addict, if you can get your Shepard to help at all you are doing better than me. My Great Danes provide moral support at the most. They tend to grab pieces while I split and scatter them all over the property. This is 2 yr old Thor making off with a prize.

maybe in a few years I can gt the new dog to pull a sled she is a lab shepard mix . now all she wants to do is steal the bark and the little pieces from under the splitter. One day I hope my little girl will give me a little help also .

got my wife to take some pics this morning. Gracie needs a better harness, I could tell this one is not going to work long term...

We're getting a good start though.:greenchainsaw:

Wow, hes a big fella! Take him out with you if you ever get a handful of wood, make him carry a piece back to the house with you.

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet....That looks like you both are having a blast...I am much more for the guys that work and play w/ their animals than the PITA freaks that have a large over weight dog kenneled up in the city...

Yep, we have a good time. I generally take her everywhere, sometimes to class, when I can get away with it. She hates being left home, so this will give her another job when we go cutting.

The darn dog knows me better than I know myself.
