What's the best way to transplant some silky dogwoods from the woods?

wait until leaf drop.

get all the roots you can, and don't let em dry out.

Make sure you have owner's permission

They should transplant easily. Pick smaller plants, they'll be easier to move and small plants establish faster.
Notice where they grow in the woods, they like shady moist areas. Try to move them into similar growing conditions.
If all you have is full blazing hot sun in the place you want to move them, hunt up a few trees while your at it and grow a little forest. Create an area as big as you can break up the soil, add some compost, mulch it, then plant the trees.
Pay attention to planting depth, get he plants in at the same depth they were growing.
Once you get them planted, water them in good. Let the soil just dry out before watering again.
