Friend gave me his 028 AV SUPER electronic quickstop (label on air filter cover shows 028 AVEQ MAGNUM).
18" .325 74dl-.063. No fix required? He thought it was seized. Blows 150psi and cuts wood.

Is "E" for electronic ignition? Is "Q" for the "quick stop" chain brake? What is the expected bore/CC 42-44-46mm ? What does "magnum" mean if anything other than a marketing term. Most say it is reliable but heavy...measures @ 16lb 9.5oz
Will post pix in my gallery soon.
Thanks

No Magnum but you are correct, electronic ignition and chain brake. Until you measure, look at starter cover. All the Supers I've dealt with had 4 bolt starter cover. Straight 028 have 3 bolt. Others may jump in but just my experience with about 15 028 s I've found this. I just got another 028 last night that was in a fire. This is cleaned up. Starts easy, idles revs and cuts great. I have spare parts to make like new. Bullet proof? Hell yes! Supers are preferred but they all cut.uploadfromtaptalk1465837031044.jpguploadfromtaptalk1465837036341.jpg

Certainly could be the intake boot...check it out.

Looks like you do have a Super. Just an odd decal. It is a little later model with the twist knob on AF cover (if original ). Looks like a nice clean machine

Could be an air leak. Do you have or access for pressure and vac test? Maybe seals. First thing get a carb kit. Assuming Walbro, K-10 Wat. A good resource for doing carbs and work on 028 and all saws is Donyboy73 on YouTube. Excellent vids. Some 028 threads here. Changing sprocket is tricky first time. See http://www.arboristsite.com/community/index.php?threads/295610/
and also Donyboy73 for sprocket. As noted in thread, get an Oregon rim sprocket conversion.

Appreciate very much the stihl 028 specific info. My friend is an awsome carpenter/builder and not as much as a chain saw guy as me by a long shot...He is the original owner and I can probably find out more use and "when and why " he retired this saw. It was a lot dirtier than in the pix but I have a big compressor and blow gun...LOL
refreshing a carb is easy for me. I have been given over 30 saws of all types (see gallery pix) most had carb and fuel line problems, a few had crank seal problems. Only a few (homelite 330) had flex carb boot problems. Have all kinds of walbro, tillotson and zama kits in the "carb kit box".
I like very much it has 150psi and nice big blue spark. The rest should be easy peasy. Hell the chain was sharp too...
He now runs IIRC a MS251? MS250 so he was not in love with the 028 any more if he had to do any big work on it.
I've never been a big pro OR anti stihl guy but the 015L and 019T I was given have impressed me in a positive way. We'll see how this 028 does....

I have four of them. They all run. It's the saw Stihl should never have discontinued.

Note the outer bumper spike I added. It really helps during noodle cutting and felling. These saws are keepers.
Amen brother. The one we bought new for my Dad umpteen years ago. Was only reliable saw for years. Still awesome but mostly relegated to shelf Queen status.

I've never seen that "magnum" sticker before. I wonder if it was originally on the box, and somebody pulled it off and stuck it on their saw.
That's like having a "Super Dooper" saw, or a jumbo xtra large soft drink. Lol

Give it a quick run with no air filter, retune first of course.

In a saw that old, it can be the fuel filter, fuel line, carb, air leak, etc...

It has the troublesome choke in airfilter issue like the 026. The spring can get weak causing the flap to close at times. It's a head scratcher and worth a quick attempt to eliminate it.

I had a pro saw mechanic ask me for 026 advice because he had actually split the case and did a full rebuild and new carb, etc... Was the airfilter in the end.

Nice saw btw.

Thanks for the "YS". The saw won't end up being free.
This friend is from the New England Norton Club. I'll be happy to give back a diagnostic dyno session for his Norton Commando 850 that is running hot on one side (or too cold on the other) and we need to even out the blueing of the pipes.
I'll ask about the history of the 028 magnum sticker....

added:
Just back from local stihl dealer. Said he never sold a 028 carb boot but has sold several impulse tubes. It will be a while before I can play any further.
