I recently got a Stihl file guide - the kind that attaches to a file and rides on top of the cutter. The file guide is for a 7/32" file. The guy at the saw shop said that it wouldn't matter if I used the same guide for the file for my 026, which is a 3/16" file. Is that right? Won't the guide hold the file too high up on the cutter?

It would definitely hold a larger percentage of the smaller files diameter above the tooth giving you a slightly blunter top plate. Just slip several strips of sheet metal in for shims to use it in a pinch.

Adjustable or preset

Depends if the file guide will adjust for the change in hieght of the file.

Does the files gude have multiple "angle and height" adjustments then the answer is yes.

If all you do is slide the file into the sharpener hole with height and angles are preset then probably not.

Post a pic so we can see it.

Got the SnowKat running up at the cabin!
