Stihl part numbers

I'm looking through some Stihl chainsaw IPLs and noticed that many parts will interchange from model to model but want to be more specific. I think the first 4 digits for example 1127 designate the model of the saw but am unsure about the other numbers. If the last numbers match does it mean it's the same part regardless of the model of the saw?

The middle set indicates the part, like 030=piston assy.

Specifically, I was checking pulse hoses, the MS250 and 290 hoses have the same last numbers but the model numbers of the saws are different but the hoses look alike..

It's been my experience that even dedicated Stihl dealers struggle with part numbers more so than they don't.

I've had several dealers tell me that Stihl's part numbering process is a mess.

I assume the top one is for the 290? That's what mine looks like and it did fit in the motor and the handle. I don't have any like the lower one but I'm not working on any 025s either. Anyway, thanks for your help.

290 and 50 have distinctly different hoses, look a bit similar but will not interchange

Yep, I just looked at one from a 250, no chance of getting them mixed up. Fuel line a bit different also.

Even that does not work on occasion. The ignition module for the MS460, Part # 1122 400 1314, is the same part number for the MS660, but the 460's IM wire to the spark plug won't reach the 660's plug.

That means if an impulse line fits then it fits. If it don't then it don't. FFS you can do what I do and use a piece of tygon for 30¢ and say screw Stihl.
I don't know how you were able to translate what I said into a completely different comment like that.

It looks like this is what they send, and leave it to the customer or dealer to change it as needed.....

These things always fascinate me. Sometimes I think it's the MFG's way of saying, "Let the buyer beware."

I bought one earlier in the year and the wire was about 2" too short, had to re-use the old wire with the new coil. Good thing they screw out and aren't made into the coil.

The ENTIRE part number needs to match for it to be the same part. Often times a part number originated with a certain line of saws and got that saw's four number designation at the beginning of the part number. ie: part #1128 640 9100 (oil tank breather) is used on virtually every Stihl saw currently made. The numbering system really isn't that hard. Every time one of my Stihl guys starts bellyaching about the Stihl parts system I just have them start searching for Husky parts on their computer..it's much worse.
