I recall reading warnings on other Fuel tanks that read
“Caution: Contents may forcefully eject”
Or ...
“Open slowly”

None of those tanks caps flipped up btw.

Nice young man. Sorry he got hurt, I shudder to think what would’ve happened if he hadn’t made it back to his line...

One time near dark, I was cutting after a break and failed to notice I had mis-threaded the fuel cap. I started it again, ran it about 10 seconds and “Whuff!”
I had a fire. Incredibly scary.
Saw got pitched in the pond and I lost some arm hair and got reminded of one of the best pieces of advice ...
“You can never be too careful.”

I never did that with a fuel cap in my lifetime... until I did.

I use different Stihl products most days, current model Km-94 screw cap will spray fuel all over your hand when I refill it prior to work. Blowers BG-56 & BG-86 will blast fuel on your hands when 'slowly' opening fuel cap (screw type), MS660...does it, MS201...does it actually I'll stop there as I can't think of any 2T Stihl product that doesn't do it flippy or not. Of coarse other brands do too. I've tried opening caps as slow as you can, makes little difference. Its a good indication that you have fresh gas with high reed vapour pressure. Sure its annoying when you are filling up on the back of your truck and it spurts in your eye and face or if your just about to eat a sammich & you have gas on your hands. EPA does not like 'vented' gas tanks. Gas is like soda....it creates gas pressure. Stale gas is the only solution & I ain't running stale gas!

Try opening with a rag over the cap, like a radiator?

I have 5 Stihl products from blowers to saws and trimmers, they all spray gas when I open them up to refuel. Whether they have been ran 30 seconds prior or have sat under the work bench for a week. I just keep a rag to cover instead of getting myself covered. Oh well

We've got a few Stihl things around here - saws (170, 250, 260, 290, 360), trimmers, a KM - and I don't remember ever getting sprayed when opening the gas tank.

(Not at all saying that it doesn't happen...)

How about the pressure build up with the gas can on a hot day. We hear it purge but never give it must thought.

Open all gas caps slowly. With the saw what if the spray of gas hits the hot muffler?
If your a climber up in the tree with no where to run I’d never open the gas cap.

I’m also a fabricator/welder too we get use to being burned. A little heat I can work through it. I leaned were I just welded not paying attention. I could feel the heat getting more intense. My forearm looked like a melted candle skin wise. It feels like turning the flame up on a gas stove.

On a tractor forum in a chainsaw section I saw a report that Osha has banned Stihl saws due to fuel geysers when hot due to the 'flippy caps'. Seems opening them rapidly can cause fuel blow out on the operator and has resulted in bad burns.

I doesn't sound right to me. If true it wouild have been published and been discussed all over the 'net'

I've got lots of stihls but I don't have ANY flippy caps

I wanna know who’s opening the fuel caps while it’s full? I’ve never had more than a moist puff and I’ve owned lots of stihls with flip caps. But I’ll admit I mostly rotate ready to run saws and service them at home.

Yes, there is that also. I was going to mention that earlier but thought I'd wait to see if anyone else did. If my last tank of the day won't be a full one, I try to only put in about what I am going to burn. Practically any time I open the cap on a hot saw (or trimmer or whatever), it is because it is out of gas.

Thank the stupid EPA for that winter gas that ain't even gas for the eruption!
Yup and the gas can that won’t take gas. I found a new gas can on the road the other day. It had 1/2 gal in it. I tried to top it off before going home and gave up at 2 gallons. It kept erupting gas out of it. Had some filter thing in it that wouldn’t flow.

Or these new gas pickups that won’t take gas because some Obama vent gets plugged up if you drive dirt roads. (I know pre Obama but still his way of thinking ) I’d like to send them a bill for lost productivity since 2004 when the first pickup I had with this issue started. I won’t even buy a gas pickup for work anymore because of that. Can’t afford the $400 shop bill to fix it every 10k miles, or the lost time when it takes 30 min to get gas.

But hey it’s “saving the world” just like those wind turbines that they ruined all our roads putting up and took acres of land out of production. All sacrificed for the greater good of the cronies of and the guys legislating them, oh wait I meant the environment.

While I hate the stupid wind turbines spoiling the view of the country side, Really bill boards can't be worsce.
The solor farms that have cropped up near me are worsce.

At least they are still able to farm around then unlike the solar farms. 40 acres of solor panals row after row of solar panals.
Probably more of the Bushes crap.

The fact is true that fuel spews out right after the cap is twisted. I have several Stihl pieces with the flippy cap so I've grown accustomed to letting the pressure ease out.
