my dealer knows I would never buy a new saw. He is a good guy and is practical. He said saw is basically obsolete.Cant get pto side bearing but seal is available. No antivibe rubbers either.

bs, the av parts you can still get. and the seal should still be available, check e-crap also check cheapstihlparts.com

let me know if the seal fixes it, odd thing is after tinkering with it more without success i noticed it blows air out the intake with the filter off. if i put my hand near the carb it will wet it with fuel.

the saw also sounds like it is hitting hard when it runs, not a smooth idle.....

my other echo 351vl douse not do that at all:cry:

i did check the points again and went back through the carb (no build up and clear) and still couldn't find anything else wrong unless it is possibly a bad coil.

All these saws spit back from the carb. Ignore it...

"hitting hard".. hmmm... Condensor...

"hitting hard".. hmmm... Condensor...

i guess what stumps me is i replaces the condensor (not with a stock one) and it runs exactly as it did before.

i forgot my camera at work but i will try to get some video of it.

sorry i hate to contradict good advice i am just loosing patience trying to fix this thing. thanks everyone, i will beat this thing yet

a quick rundown of my work so far,

replaced pulse line, old one split
replaced condenser
set points .020" and made sure they were clean
went through carb and it is clean with no buildup
checked compression 150psi
replaced spark plug
cleaned fuel filter pick up
twiddled with high and low jets, left them at 1 1/4 out

non of these things changed how this saw runs at all except i can stall out the saw turning the jets in to far. i want to try to get a video of it running tomorrow night.

Condensor - buy new - your stihl dealer can get it for you..

I have had exactly the same symptoms with an old 08S, which I was able to solve (finally) with a new plug wire. The HV lead wire appeared to be broken inside.....cheap fix.

In my experience, any two cycle machine with a crankshaft seal leak runs better when choked. I am not at all familiar with an 031, but if it has points and a condenser, then the timing is set by the point gap .

If done incorrectly, it will behave as you are describing. Play with the point gap, and see what happens.

This thread is what I was referring to.

In this thread, you have a cond. mounted on the coil, where is the wire attached?..

Why not just an atom module?

the wire from the condensor is routed back into the points through the rubber grommet if that is what you are asking.

i will have to look up what an atom module is, i assume it eliminates the points and such.

Do an AS search on converting 031 to electronic. There are many threads... and choosing the wrong module will make your problems much worse...

Points work great... and give you big spark at very low recoil speeds.

see if this works for video
