Ain't gonna guess, but as long as you can back right up to that pile, it looks good enough to grab.

Appears to be an appropriate old saying, I bet it burns better than snowballs!

Looks like cotton wood to me...
anyone else?
Free Wood

Nope. Cottonwood is known as a "sapwood tree", meaning little/no visual difference between sap/heart. This ain't.

Ducking behind the crappy picture, I'll say sassafras, or maybe even black walnut. Sure would help to see leaves.

It'll burn for shoulder-season.

Black walnut I think.
Hard to tell for sure from the pictures but the tree behind sure looks like black walnut and the cuts logs although heartwood is lighter than I'm used to seeing black walnut.

Decent firewood.

Doesn't look like Black Walnut to me, all of the Black Walnut that I have burned/cut was a distinctive brown color. I would say it is some kind of Elm species.

kyle23,

Yep a little difficult to id from that picture.
Bark edge sure looks like poplar but the wood colour looks wrong.
Closest thing it looks like to me is walnut but that color isn't walnut looking either.

I'm curious now what this mystery wood turns out to be.

For a minute there I thought we were looking at the same pile from a different angle until I saw you're six states away:

*FREE FIRE WOOD**

I'm not going to guess what it is but in the pic on my link you can see some sprouts with leaves that might offer a clue. Your stuff ? The bark seems right for black walnut but I got a bunch of walnut this spring and something in the pic leans me away from that, can't put my finger on what. Only way to find out is drive down and see.

This is my answer for that question when I cut up blow downs for people in need:

Q: "What kind of tree is it?"

A: "The kind that burns."

Free firewood is free firewood in my book. There is never enough.

BTW This ex-midwester wonders if it could be elm.

This is an Elm tree I cut a couple weeks ago. Compare... Discuss... Carry on...

<img src=http://www.arboristsite.com/attachments/firewood-heating-wood-burning-equipment/305809d1374713376-wood-jpg>Picture so hard to make out detail so I downloaded it and made it into a decent enough image to try and Id it properly.

Ahh exactly what I didn't expect it to be.
Soon as I saw the diamonds shape and elm lines in the bark then the cream passing stripes in the end of the bark it was an easy id.

Rock elm.
I should have known it was either hickory or rock elm from the wood color :)

So rare I ever get to see a red elm here let alone cut them.

I wish I had red Elm here too...
We had it in Michigan, but all I got here is American Elm...
It burns hot as hell, but pretty fast...
It does get that hard to light Hedge rocking pretty good though...
I call it "instant gratification" firewood...

Hedgerow,

I never would have guessed that tree you have on the ground is American Elm.
I would have said red elm after the first cut but the splitter might have said a different story.

I find American elm here to be just a tad better than white ash.
Always a fun day splitting American elm though, and you get lots of elm kindle when you are done :)

Silver maple is my gratification wood.
Some neighbour always delivering me silver maple logs, one needs to come down from one of the tree services or someone leaves me a giant pile at the front without saying anything.

I pretty much have to burn silver maple or learn to swim in it :)
Been thinking about building the great silver maple pyramid, same size as the one in Egypt. LOL
