For tree work are some carabiner locking mechanisms preferred over others? I seem to see there are several types; screw, ball, triact, auto? It is difficult to figure this out just looking at a catalog page.

As long as it takes 2 different actions before it is prepared to open than its fine to use (technically its 3 motions, with opening the gate being the third). I prefer ball locks but most guys I work with prefer those that lift, twist and open. I use Petzl Williams with my Eye to Eye setup and a Petzl D with my split tail setup.

Anything with double locks and large, open throats.

But I positively HATE the carabiners with the tiny little balls that have to be pushed in to get them to move. Too slow, too much effort to open, dam near impossible to open with gloves on or cold fingers.

It probably doesn't help that I am missing a couple of fingers, so you might consider my opinions a little bit biased toward "easy to open" carabiners.
