unusual amount of coals

thanks guys, but this is an unusual, as in never before problem

Your burning your stove with too little air for the moisture content in the wood. Once the wood/charcoal has smoldered down to the ash level the only way to burn them up would be to open the door a crack and get the entire be redhot. rake them towards your air intakes and add smaller pieces of wood and they will burn up. If you had enough air during the burning process you would have achieved complete combustion of the wood resulting in just ash.
This happens to me sometimes and its more of a pain in the ash to burn them....so I just shovel them out into a bucket and dispose of them.

Damn you guys can argue!

Allstihl, before I wander off topic here, I'm with the other guys that it was a combination of atmospheric conditions - wind speed/direction + barometric pressure + relative humidity, the exact combination of which you haven't seen before, and may not see again for many years. If it's back to working properly, I'd chalk it up to "stuff happens".

Spidey, your single experience with a single EPA wood stove doesn't equal EPA stoves are all crap and won't keep you warm north of the mason dixon. My experience the last month or so has proven that wrong. The only coaling problems I have are when I turn the stove DOWN too far and want to reload sooner than it's ready. This happens when I'm trying to wrangle 14 hours of heat out of it while on OT. Open it up just a little, and it's just a "starter" coal bed when I get home. Too much, and it can be full cold after 10 hours. Took some time to figure out where to set it, now I love it. I'm heating 2000 sq ft of trailer house on a somewhat insulated full basement with a back porch that leaks air like a tire that's been over spike strips - for now.

I'll give a full review of my stove at the end of the heating season. It's not gonna score a 10, but the parts I don't like have nothing to do with the basic design or heating capacity.

Oh sure… see what happens when you give a CheeseHead a little power… :bang:
He comes back from gallivanting around the countryside and thinks he can kill a perfectly good argument with some facts and real-life experience…

I knew this would happen… I just knew it :hmm3grin2orange:

thanks for the straight foward answer i believe you are right , stuff happens

Alrighty then, so to bottom line this...
1. allstihl had weird draft conditions and a stove full of known heavy coaling wood.
2. some "EPA" stoves when pushed hard to try to keep up with a heavy heat load, get all constipated with coals.

Now that we got that outta the way...what else ya got?!? global warming?!?...maybe world peace?...hey steve, does AS need a professional internet pizzing match intervention specialist??? :hmm3grin2orange:

Yes. Know anyone qualified for the job that's crazy enough to accept it? We're looking for one...

Spidey, don't worry about arguing with me. Just cause I have a "ban" button don't make me better. If you (or anyone) disagrees with me, feel free to tell me I'm full of it. Just don't break the rules and make me smack ya, I'd rather just send spammers to kingdom come and never have to ban a regular. I like a good fight as much as the next guy as long as it doesn't degrade into a poop-slinging match.
