Hello Bill,

The biggest worry is being sure you cover it in concrete reinforcing mesh as we had blackbirds nesting in ours.

A mesh is fine for non heating times....but it will creosote up when burning wood most likely.

I know we are old fashion but we burn open stack, and use a bucket upside down in the summer. We learned this from a old timer. It works great for us.

I have thought about using a cap in the off season, best of both worlds.

That artis directional looks great!!!

Most caps reduce draw, and create creosote problems. The old timer that advised us not to use a cap mentioned chimneys with caps usually have dark stains on the roofs where the smoke does not rise.

If a person was trying to use a cap to manage strong local winds, wouldn't burning open stack just make the problem worse?

I have a screen in my cap, but I take it out when we get to the cold season and start burning around the clock. It does get a lot of creosote on it if you don't clean it about once a month or so (the screen, not the cap)
