Walnut??

do you have anything with bark on it?
doesn't look like walnut to me
the picture on the right looks a little bit like black locust. is the wood super dense/heavy?
I've never cut catalpa, seems like a trash tree.
 
Just saw this thread and my guess was Red Elm too. If you ever get any logs large enough to saw into 4/4, let me know. Beautiful grain.
Yeah, but H E double hocky sticks on equipment :) If it's red elm, it will be super hard to split, especially if it has seasoned. Dead standing red elm is one of those trees that normally causes a spark or two to come off of my chain. Catalpa is not very good for heat. Red Elm is fantastic. Only draw back is that it does not leave a bed of coals, so burn it with something that does.
