Walnut??

Looks like catalpa to me. Should smell a bit like coffee when fresh cut.
Well it looks a bit like Walnut but like a poster said Catalpa maybe what does it smell like and is it very light for its size?

the picture on the right looks a little bit like black locust. is the wood super dense/heavy?
I've never cut catalpa, seems like a trash tree.

I was thinking maybe Butternut but now lean toward Catalpa. It should have a slight odor, maybe like cardbard.
If it's catalpa, it will be really light weight, and you can light it with a match. It also won't rot. Makes great posts, and great kindling.

The color has to much red for catalpa, with the color and the way it split and the spalting on the summer wood and the appearance of the outer surface my guess would be dead Red Elm.

Looks like dead red elm, I’ve been cutting alot of it lately.
I think you got it with the Red Elm. This little piece was hard to split.
But the similarities between elm and catalpa are very close!

Just saw this thread and my guess was Red Elm too. If you ever get any logs large enough to saw into 4/4, let me know. Beautiful grain.

If it's red elm, it will be super hard to split, especially if it has seasoned. Dead standing red elm is one of those trees that normally causes a spark or two to come off of my chain. Catalpa is not very good for heat. Red Elm is fantastic. Only draw back is that it does not leave a bed of coals, so burn it with something that does.
just sawed some to 8/4 14' to 18' long, 8 to 12" wide. Waiting for someone with $$$$$ looking for trailer boards.
Red elm. burn some in a fire, if it smells like cow poop it is definite.
