Weird tree

Hello. I could use some help identifying this tree from western Pennsylvania. The tree was dead so I don’t know what the leaves look like. It cuts very hard almost like a locust. Any help appreciated, I can’t find another tree on my property like this but I’m thinking of milling it

With the dark grey and stringy look in the cut, some sort of Elm?

I'm thinking either Chinese Elm or Catalpa. Is it hard to split?

Looks like White Oak. Smell like whiskey?

Thanks for everyone responding. It doesn’t smell like whiskey and from what I can tell it’s really hard to split. Almost like a locust. I think it’s some sort of elm tree. I’ve only ever milled cherry and ash so I’m going to slab this guy up. If it’s elm I think it’s good for outdoor, no?

The bark - especially in the third picture on the bottom half of the log - looks like persimmon.

I was thinking persimmon too. The bark seems a little thin.

epicormic bud growth makes my think red elm. Burn a piece, if it smells like cow $hit that confirms it!

I'm thinking it looks rather like a pear. Much like Bradford pear that I have cut.

Possibly butternut hickory?

Show up the grain after you mill it. If it is Red Elm, I think it's suppose to be good for outdoor use. If memory serves me. Beautiful grain.

red elm lasts a long time outside, makes excellent trailer boards because it does not split easily
