To answer the pointed questions, I used name brand gasoline [Chevron] and two stroke oil produced by Quicksilver, which is Mercury marine. I used this oil because at the time I had a two-stroke Yamaha outboard attached to the boat parked at my dock. And YES I put the proper amount of oil into the fuel; If anything I put a little too much. I've been dealing with engines since I was a child, helping my dad change the oil on his cars when I was four years old.
I'm pretty sure that these machines were simply not that well engineered. That's why I bought the "motorbike engine attached to a bar" back then. I still have it, though I don't use it. A 1963 McCulloch 250, I had it rebuilt by a guy who posts here from Tennessee and it starts most of the time on the first pull. I really ought to sell it.
