What Is This Stuff?

I picked this up at the city recycle center and thought it was Silver Maple till I started splitting it. My little 8 ton splitter has a heck of a time and the rounds just sink into the wedge. It won't pop apart, I split a few small rounds and it almost tears apart like Elm. It's very light weight and chainsaw ripped right through it like butter.

yep, looks like bass wood.....junk for burning unless yer there to keep throwen it in the stove

i had a very big tree last year that looked alot like that . the ole timer that looked at it said it was quilted maple , and said i just cut up and split a small fortune ..lol when i did get a half way decent split . it looked kinda wavy and shiny. hoot

Looks like Basswood to me too, I have a small pile of it left from last fall.

Basswood has a unique smell too, like no other wood. I really don't care for the smell. Gets worse when it's dry in lumber form & you saw it.
