I can't get the pics to zoom up but I am fairly certain it is one of the red oaks

I think you are right. The splits look very similar to the actual red oak I was splitting last winter.

I dried a 16" x 2' walnut log for 16 months. I cut it into 1" cookies and sealed it in a plastic tote, 1" of water in the bottom after 2 days. It takes forever to air dry wood unless you expose the insides.

The wood kiln my friend operates, 4'x12', had a malfunction where the air dryer broke down and he had 6" of water in the bottom from running just the heater for 48hours.

1 year per inch of thickness to air dry for use in woodworking. Not sure how that translates to firewood...
 
Splits look like RO but the end grain doesn't seem to have rays typical of oaks. Would probably be visible if the end grain was freshly cut though...
