288xp case rot. What should I do?

I finally got around to building this saw after it sat for a couple of years in pieces (I bought it that way). I knew it had some case rot near the carb, but it wasn't a big deal to me considering this saw isn't going to be anything worth looking at to begin with. After I split the case I noticed some pitting on the mating surfaces during clean up. Then I noticed a bit more near where the cylinder mounts. Do you guys think I should just get another case? Or would it be ok if I use some threebond with the case gasket and seal her up? This is my first time dealing with case rot, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I started trying to clean up some of the rot near the carb, but that was before I split the case and saw the rest. There doesn't seem to be any major pitting on the mating surfaces around the crank.

Here isnwhat I woukd do. Get a glass plate and use some valve grind pass to lap the case half sealing surfaces until they are 100% clean. For the rest of the areas showing corrosion I woukd take them down to bare metal with a bead blast and re paint or powder coat.

You’ll definitely want to research how to neutralize the corrosion. I don’t remember.

I appreciate the suggestion. I may try to pick up another case for the time being, and try to restore this one later when I have more time. I'm going to need to purchase a few things to make this happen.

Farmertech has the ORANGE cases. I know I Know but they work for $22

I have a worm-gear Skil saw that developed rot. I think the prior owner stored it on concrete. I wire-brushed off the scale as best I could, then coated the cancer/corrosion with drain oil. That seems to have halted it.

After wire brushing, then washing with Dawn and hot water, then letting it dry real good, then degreasing with brake cleaner, you could probably thin down some good oil-based primer paint so that it gets into all the nooks and crannies, and that might stop it, too.
