We live in Yorkville, IL. about 40 minutes west of lake michigan. In May/June we planted 3 White pines in a burm. We followed the instructions from the nursery and watered for about 5 minutes every other day. They looked beautiful. (7-8 ft. tall) In the last 2 weeks they have started to turn yellow from the inside. The ends of the the branches are still green. We know we are not overwatering. They are not dug into the ground too deep. We don't know what to do. Are they dying. Is this normal? Should we use fertilizer sticks? We are at a loss. We don't want to loose all 3. There are 5 trees in the burm. They are all 12ft. apart. It goes Spruce, pine, pine, pine spruce. The 2 spruces look great. The one pine in the middle does not look bad. Any advice?????

If you post pictures we can see what you are talking about.

Some inner needle drop is natural. That's why it's called fall.

white pines drop needles that are 3 years old. Post some pics, but do't start to worry just yet.

white pine

Looks normal for this time of the year, for new transplants of white pine. I have one in the backyard that is 6 yrs. old looks the same. I planted it from a seed.

We have numerous white pines that are around 25 years old that drop needles like that every year. It's occurring right now. It's frustrating to see such a nice full tree become so bare, but by the end of the next summer it seems to be full of needles again, just to repeat the process.
