I had a 290 and was getting laid a couple time a week. I got rid of it and bought a 361, I'm getting some every night now.

BO,

Tell us about their weight? Can they be split vertically? Are they pros? Easy to rebuild? Found any plastic in there? I really want to know about the their clam shell?

Just askin',

Joat

ill make a bargain with ya all, if my 310 dies before it has a hundred cord under it (which will be before 2010) i will admit that the homeowner line of saws suck. but im expect to get like 3-4 hundred cord out of it.

Surviving a lot of use are not their weak point, as far as I know....:)

Heres a thought,

1)Where would stihl be if it wasn't for the 290-390, their most popular selling saw series? They wouldn't be #1 guarantee that.
2)I own a 290, yeah its heavy after an all day adventure, but with a sharp 16'' chain, filed rakes and an opened up muffler it cuts quite well.
3)Most 290-390 owner's do not subscribe here or care much about cutting wood other than a warm house.
4) I work part time at a Tractor supply and I have handled the husky homeowner saws and the stihl's homeowner saws are much better quality in my opinion. The only thing that husky has it the air filtration. But the price is quite husky compared to stihl with much better service. A comparable 455 rancher is circa $450. stihl can be had for well under $400.
5)They just plain work, and for a long time. Thats one thing you cannot argue with. And they are leap years ahead of wild thing etc.

But a 361 is on the way because of the better all day features.

I say BS to better all day features and it's really because of post # 160 in this thread. LOL

I still don't know the difference between a 390 and a 361. Why 200 bucks more? I have heard it has better bearings, better pistons and different metals for the block. I heard it from the dealer but they can stretch the truth. It seems this could make it a better saw, more reliable, less chance of the heads warping under heavy loads. Maybe it has a better oil pump. I am sure the 361 is the stronger motor. I bought an 034, a pro saw, then an 026, supposedly a pro saw (but half the torque of the 034) I have found that buying the best ussually ends up cheaper in the long run if the tool is used on a regular basis. So I bought the pro saw. My dad might buy a 261 and I told him a 290 might die before he does but a 261 will go to one of his grandsons for sure. We can argue weather the 361 is worth the extra money, but until we get solid answer what the difference is between the saws we are talking in circles. So, what are the differences between the 390 and the 361? Call the dealers and maybe they know. Maybe we can all call and write in what they said and come to a conclusion.

come now, pimping your own post is poor taste. then again, we are addicts.
I'm telling you that damned saw is going to be the death of me. I came home today and she met me with nothing on but a pair a Stihl saw chaps and holding that damned 361. Where can I score some cheap Viagra.

BO,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that viagra isn't gonna work on her. You had to find out sooner or later.

Sorry,

Joat

not sure what you're missing, but basically........the 361 has better power to weight ratio and is MORE serviceable (as in long term).

I have a 290, excuse me an 029. 1996, Wilmington, NC..Hurricane whichever.
My buddy and i bought saws to make some cash and for our own messes.
I bought the 029, he bought the 036 pro. I have cut probably 50 times the wood he has with my 029. I heat with wood, he doesn't....

His saw is much nicer, but my 029 was MUCH more bang for the buck!
If it weren't for this stupid site, I'd still be quite happy with it, but hey.
