2 different trees I think, your very first picture is black locust but all other pictures are black walnut.

Or just picture #1 had a red glow when taken, sure looks like very odd bark for walnut though.
 
Thanks everyone. I'll go with BW at this time. As I mentioned I will be cutting at this place in the future and will keep an eye out for leaves.

IMHO Black Locust interior wood is yellow in color and the bark has longer, deeper grooves, at least that's what the Locust we have in WV looks like.
 
It is chestnut oak
I seriously doubt that...
svk lives in northern Minnesota... the Chestnut Oak don't grow within near a thousand miles of him.

These were actually cut in the central part of the state north of Minneapolis. Not in far northern MN by my cabins.

Here's a larger one which may help shed some light on it. This one is also almost dead.
