middle east: coast, that is.
i was speculatin that the 037 was just as strong as the 038m.
so's i decided to test 'em.

all cuts on same 28" bar and chain in same piece of wood.
the wood is white oak. it was cut very green and heavy a few weeks ago and it is now very frozen and heavy. :)

comments?

I'm on dialup so it will be 2011 before I can see the vids.

How about an impression from the guy running the saws?

well...
the handsome devil runnin the saws in the vid thinks they are damned near dead even.
the informal timing i did shows the 038 edging out the 037 by a second or less in a 14" frozen white oak cant.

Is the 037 ported?

not so much.....
i cleaned the carbon off the exhaust port with a dremel but i did not 'port' it.
i only ground enough to see clean metal.
matter of fact the modded 036 muffler even shrouds the exhaust port a tiny bit. the intake, transfers and the rest are all untouched.
noteworthy:
the cylinder had to be milled down a touch because the deck heights of the 036 and 038 are different. it was near a millimeter i took off. so, the port timing should be all messed up.

Runs pretty good. Have you done anything with the boot or carb lately? I saw the post about the carb linkage. I know you put alot of time and effort into the build.

thanks!

nope, haven't done anything new since the linkage fix.

i did the test because i couldn't get over the nagging feeling that the 037 and 038 were really close.

i need to fix the port timing. after that i think it will haul some chips!

I would say that the timing is "way" off. Most likely, if all set back to stock...er...well as stock as you can get, it will pick up some. Did you cc the crankcase? I bet you lost a lot of volume, something that is gonna be tricky to work around.

Awesome build BTW. Good thinking "outside the box"

cc the case?
nah. that sounds like something a guy who knows what he is doing would do. i'm more of a 'nuts and bolts guy'. i can grind and turn a wrench but 2-stroke theory escapes me.

help me out here...
what would make you say the port timing is off? is it something in the sound? we both know it is off but what gave you the impression (i'm learning here :) ).

LOL, 2-stroke theory escapes me as well.

I kinda got the impression that the timing was off when you said "1mm off the base". LOL

That lowered your transfers, and increased your intake duration substantially. Throw that in with a small base volume (im assuming small volume) and you will lose a bunch of RPM and Torque.

IMHO, (which amounts to roughly the equivalent of three magic beans) the best thing you could do would be to degree your 038 mag, then degree your 037 and see how much she is off from "stock". At least you'll know.

Very nice hybrid saw!

You can check port timing with a degree wheel on each saw. Pretty easy on intake and ex. That will give some info on how to mod the ports and/or piston.
