My friend Steve was talking with his neighbor who both used to work for the cement plant that closed a number of years ago. Dave is 84 and planning on moving to Nevada. He was telling Steve that packing to move is tough when you have a bunch of junk that has to go to the dump including a bunch of old gain saws. Steve called me and I drove up there this afternoon.

I came away with 4 saws, I think 4 bars and as many chains. H gave me 2 XL Automatics (1 with a bar and chain one without), a C-51 and a 900G. The C-52 has a 24" bar and chain and the 900G came with a 36" Oregon bar and chain that appears to be original. He also gave me a David Bradley bar that has seen little or no use and 2 NOS Homelite bars. Steve took pictures that I will post when he sends them to me.

Dave thanked me for saving him a trip to the dump. He was happy to see the saws go to someone that will get them running and use them. He wouldn't take any money but I did give him a small Husqvarna saw that he can use around the house. He bought a new Stil but someone broke in his house and stole it. He was blown way that I gave him the saw so we were both happy. The C-51 is like a twin to my C-52 and the 900 is the first saw I had that is over 100cc. I now have 3 non-running XLs. The first one I picked up has a Zama carb. These two have SDC carbs. Dave said these saws were junk when they were new.

Now I have to wait all week to get into these saws. This is the only downside to the story. Why couldn't this have happened on Friday afternoon?

The camera batteries died before I could get more pictures. The 1/2"pitch chain has a lot of meat left on the cutters and isn't rusted bad. I tried to get a good picture of the Oregon bar and the name that was stamped it it. I thought this was pretty cool. Anyone have an idea of how old the bar is based on that picture? I assume this is a replacement bar because Homelite sold saws with their own bars installed, correct?

From the lack of paint and the looks of what is left my first thought is to strip the saw and paint it. I'll probably get it in running order and cleaned up before I make that decision.

I found a post on another board that has a NOS bar like mine: ###################################/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=13390 The dates in the post lead me to believe the bar may be original of the same vintage as the saw.

Beautiful big saw!!! Makes me tired just looking at it!

I'd have been tickled sh*tless to get the two XL's. A free-breathing metal-cased 60cc saw with an 18" bar and a razor-sharp chain is enough for a good man to work with. I can have your 36" tree falling before you're finished fiddling with your compression release.

My favorite saw has a name -- Ol' Blue. And my peeps were calling 'er that before Homelite figured it out. In simple terms, I have never held in my hands a two-cycle gas-powered implement as reliable, as dependable, as faithful as Ol' Blue. I fill the gas tank, top off the oil tank, give 'er a pull or two, and work or idle, no matter, the next time the saw shuts down is when the fuel tank is dry. Period. Rain or shine, cold or hot, good day or bad, that saw never stops until the fuel is gone, unless I shut 'er off.

But I digress...

GREAT SCORE on the saws!

Good pictures Bob. That saw appears to have a few differences to the std 900G machine - as stated previously, the top cover is from an earlier 9-26/23 saw, and the front bar mounting stud has been modified to a later design - or the case is from a later series machine ?

A good old unit all the same.

Chris.
