Anyone ever had this issue? Video/sound below...

It started as I was finishing up for the day.

You're listening for the very rapid, high(ish) pitched rattle. To me, it sounds like the exhaust gasket rattling due to loose hardware. I was unable to find anything loose on the outside. I can't tear into it right now due to other things on the agenda.

Muffler Bearing...You'll need a left handed screw driver....:hmm3grin2orange:
All kidding aside, I have an 066 that the clutch always rattles, Ivé put a new clutch, clutch drum, bearing and sprocket on it and there's no noticeable play anywhere, but it's always rattled since new.
I would go over everything just to make sure nothing has worked loose, if nothings loose I wouldn't worry about it.
Maybe a worn out sprocket bearing??

Thanks for looking guys/gals. I especially like the wolverine comment. :msp_thumbup:

After reviewing the video on my phone, wife's iPad and daughter's kindle.. I can't hear the sound I'm trying to highlight. It does however, come in loud and clear on my wifes computer... Go figure. It's also not as high pitched as I originally thought. Being an automotive guy, it sounds like an engine with a messed up lifter. Extremely fast and resembling abnormal contact between two parts.

Anyway, if some of you don't mind listening from an actual computer, that would be fantastic.

I've put down and sectioned 100-150 trees with this saw and never heard this extremely rapid noise. It happened after I couldn't get the saw started. Had to let it sit for a while.. I'm definitely not complaining.. But I should take the saw in. May as well! The 394xp should be on my door step in 36hrs :hmm3grin2orange:

Adjust the valves and make sure the nods not rocking.

Sounds like the regular clutch noise to me. Try removing it and see what happens. You'll need to remove the complete clutch, not just the drum... otherwise you'll have pieces of clutch everywhere.

Does it sound kind of like this? I'm not on a computer so my speakers may be out of tune.

Already tried that. Next up.. Mechanic in a can.

See if you can hear it with the chain brake on.

The chain brake was on in the video. It does it regardless.

I'll look into it before lunch. Hopefully it's a matter of tightening something up... The closest dealer with auto-tune software is 50 minutes each way. The three dealers within 15 miles won't look at auto-tune saws even for mechanical issues.

First to admit, I'm far from being a saw mechanic

Cut a couple strips from a manilla folder and slip them between the clutch and drum. If the vibration noise changes or goes away you'll have an idea where it's coming from.

Based upon your post, it sounds like you have a pretty good amount of time on the saw. Has the drive sprocket ever been changed?

Strange things happen. My 281XP developed an abnormal noise once upon a time. Come to find out when I set it down and picked it up on a loose gravel surface in the landing, a very small, odd shaped stone found its way in through the recoil cover and due to its shape couldn't find its way out. It did rattle a bit but I never really did anything about it. Just figured I'd busted a piece of plastic off inside as the saw ran fine. Found it when I replaced the starter rope.

Hope all works out, definitely keep us posted.

Take Care

Like I said, mine sounds the same and has since it was new. It is a ticking noise and is coming from the starter side of the saw. I had some guys listen to it at a gtg last year and they didn't think it was anything to worry about?

I can hear it but don't know enough to diagnose it for you. Maybe if i try to describe it someone else will have a better idea.

It's constant and continual. "Rattle" usually means chaotic to me with no type of pattern. This almost sounds like a higher pitched and faster version of a kid putting a card on his bike wheel. I would guess wood on the flywheel but it's metallic sounding.

OP, please confirm I'm hearing it correctly. I have Hi FI headphones and a 562xp. I think I hear what you do.

You definitely hear it, yes. I found that if I turn my phone all the way up, I can hear it.

The sounds almost gets singled out towards the end of the video when I'm pulling the camera up and away.

I knew it would be simple

Thanks guys for the words/comments and especially wise cracks.

Clutch drum needle bearings were the culprit. It was obvious once the cover came off.. With all the play the drum had.

Due to regular use, I've been greasing it every week.. Didn't do so last week.

Anyway, it's nice and tight now. I stopped using the saw as soon as I heard the noise, so it looks like I can keep working for now.

I have a new needle bearing, rim sproket, starter rope and air filter on the way for good measure.

This is still the original rim sprocket.
