I have the newer version MS271 and the cylinder is past cleaning up. I have a older early version good MS271 cylinder. I can't find a parts diagram online for the older early MS271 version. What parts will it take to convert? What piston and intake mount needed and is that all that will be needed. Trying to see if it is worth fixing as the price of new is not cost effective. Thanks for any help.......

The new model cylinder design way over half the price of a new saw that I have beyond fixing....

You are buying what parts?
Piston/cylinder?
As far as I know, you will just need the newer intake boot and clamp.

I found this out early, and just send the boot along with the new block to take care of that problem.

There are many parts different between the older and the newer version. In my opinion it is not worth it. Differences are in the following parts: piston and cylinder, muffler and gasket, intake manifold, carburetor, air filter holder, shroud, ignition module. New versions of these parts can`t be used for the previous version.

Thanks everybody for the feedback. I figured from working on several of these newer saws everything is different. Was kinda hoping the MS271 cylinder/piston upgrade was just at the intake difference only. I know a MS270 is totally different all the way around.

Thanks for the information when I get a chance I will do some comparing. Just found the cylinder on EBAY and for the price decided I would take a chance, have not received yet...From what I have found the piston on the old style cylinder are the same a MS261 #11410302012 or at least they say they are. I think the new style is different.

It says several different places I have read the same piston will work in a MS261 and MS271 as I wonder if this is the old style MS271. THe MS261 is pro style top end and the MS271 is clamp shell. I can't find a parts diagram for the old style MS271 as here is a meteor piston 4 sale advertised for both and the part number 1141 020 2012.

The pistons between the MS 261 and MS 271 are different, not the same part number. According to your first post it is not clear: Do you want to rebuild an older version of the MS 271 or the newer version?

Out of the 2012 mediacat:

1141 030 2012 MS271 piston 44.7mm

1141 030 2012 MS261 piston 44.7mm

I no longer have access to the partsmart lookup, is it different?

Here is the Ohio region price list:

1141 030 2003 Piston Ø 44.7 mm $35.04

1141 030 2004 Piston Ø 47 mm $38.65

1141 030 2011 Piston 47mm $80.13

1141 030 2012 Piston 44.7mm $35.56

1141 030 2031 Piston Ø 44,7 mm $35.56

I want to put and early version cylinder/piston on a later version MS271. I have a cylinder (early version) on the way. Just trying to see if it will work and what it takes. I will need a piston and intake boot 4 sure. Just trying to find out the parts # and what is needed. Thanks for all the info....When I get the older style cylinder I will do a lot of comparing as I still have the original later MS271 parts.
