Never heard mention tamarack being used.

Really neat trees turn an awesome golden yellow in fall. They're the only conifer I know of that shed there needles every year

    Winter '18/'19 - 100* Club

I'm guessing I hung in there most of the night too. -31c (-24f) here over night too. Loaded the main floor stove 830pm last night and when I went down to load it now 1015am was still 74°. But it's a blaze king so I'm kind of cheating :p

    woodin' the hard way

Whole year since I started this thread and things are looking up. Was able to pick up a new splitter and that really helped cut back time. Found a few places that let me go in and clear out some trees as well that were close to home and easily accessible with the truck. Up to around 16+ cords 12...

Anyone use a small electric log splitter for making kindling?

Buy a blaze king then you only need kindling once a year.

    Let’s see your fall colors

It's been unseasonably cold here this "fall" went straight from summer to winter almost it seems 3rd time we've had snow already. Leaves are still hanging on the trees except most of the ash has been bare for a few weeks. And My oak trees look better now than they did all summer.

    What causes this

Thanks for the replies guys looked into it and I believe it to be frost cracks. -40 isn't uncommon here. Most of the trees seem to be healed over but obviously it created a week spot in that rather tall small diameter tree. It came down in high wind storm.

    What causes this

I've noticed several green ash trees on my property have these long cracks in them just curious as to what is the cause.

    Blazeking

I was only joking when I said it'll last 3 days 30 hrs is doable though. But it all depends how much heat output you need. If you need alot and your running it on high 8+/- hrs is usually the norm for me. But when I'm gone to work 12-14 hr cycles works well to keep the house kozy.i also bought...

    Blazeking

Except when you want to go to bed or need to go to work and want to reload the stove first but the coals from the wood you put in there 3 days ago are still too hot to go near the stove ;p

    Blazeking

My only complaint about the blaze king is it burns for too long sometimes. Takes some planning to figure out cycles but once you have it dialed in its pretty predictable. Cat vs non cat btus are btus but non cat you can't slow the fire. The cat will make poplar burn like oak.
