    Cords

Good for you Northy, making it happen. Come quite a way since the machine shop. Hope it keeps clicking for you.

Any of you come across deliberate sabotage?

We had three machines tampered with last year. Sugar was introduced into the hydraulic system and fuel. Ended up costing over 100k to fix and never found a culprit. Whoever it was had some equipment saavy

    Falling pics 11/25/09

Never worked it personally but looked closely. Mine was the 480. there's a bunch of them around here. I like the design, wish they would change hose routing. Only trouble I've heard of is with chain tension, but I think that's worked iut

Softwoods we cut are heavy and pretty hard in winter. I'm mechanical logging so I don't feel the difference in the chain with the harder frozen wood. Chains last longer actually because the snow keeps it out of the dirt.

    The Descriptive Process

Then some of the guys just about using tape to hold their eyes open. Only the good guys will take care of business like that, and Dean was one of the good guys. We talk about him all the time.

    The Descriptive Process

Oh yeah I meant it sounds short. Lots of them leave home around 3-4 am and don't make it home till 6. Quite often they are running 16-18 hours. Then there is the part nobody sees when they have to grease, fix hoses, brakes and other maintenance. No wonder not many guys want to get into it...

    The Descriptive Process

A twelve hours day for a trucker? Seems almost unheard of.

Is logging still a viable career path?

They guarantee you 5 days of work usually? Doesn't sound like a very good guarantee.

    Thinning

Is all the softwood thinning you guys do done by fixed measurement between stems? We use basal area prisms in hardwoods. the a1 eyeball gets to be very accurate for spacing too.

    So I gotta ask....

We wouldn't be nearly as mechanized if the type of timber you have existed up here. It used to, back in those days a guy could buy a new skidder and pay it off in a couple years. Now it's like mowing grass at 40+ acres a week for our little crew. Most of the commercial timberland is...

    So I gotta ask....

Just remember not all price sheets are created equal. There are guys here who pay contractors more per ton to cut their wood than the contractor could get himself on the open market. One of the mill foresters said that they (the mill) created a few monsters when they issued some of the...

You might be a logger if...

I guess we could all have new pickups, but there's just so many other things I'd rather spend my money on. Got a price last year on a new f250 diesel....74k, that pays for a lot of trips, kids clothes and what not. The Chevy I paid 8500 for ten years ago still gets the fuel tank to and from...

Never tried welding them but have used brazing to good effect. Even used solder on one of the forwarder brake lines and it still holding after a few years!
