I have a JEX Whisper Chipper that is from the 70's with a 300 6cyl. The actual year is unknown. Since the bearings are quite noisy, they needed to be replaced. Upon disassembly and removal of the bearings, I can see that the stamped numbers on the bearings are "6316 Z". There is no manufacturer stamped on the bearings. I called altec for prices and found that they were unexpectly high - $400/each. (With the need for new blades and bearings, this can be an expensive repair. I am going to buy the blade kit from altec for $300.) Would anyone happen to know the standard bearing part number and make (SKF, NSK, etc.) that asplundh sells for this chipper? I would like to avoid the Altec markup if possible.
Thanks-

I get all my bearings from Motion Industriers. they can get any bearing. Just take the old one with you. A lot cheaper than dealer
I just looked up what I think is the correct bearing (6316-Z/C3) and Motion Industries wants $456.67 each!!!
I think I’ll keep looking.

Odd, it comes up as $522 each for me. Timken brand?

It looks to be a common bearing. Not sure why Motion is wanting so much, I found it all over online for much cheaper.

Z would mean metal seal on one side. ZZ or 2Z is both sides.
RS is rubber seal.
I wouldn't think you'd want an open sided bearing on a wood chipper unless are they running in some type of oil filled hub?

The C3 is a clearance spec.

here is a listing for FAG brand https://www.sp-spareparts.com/en/p/6316-z-c3-fag
skf https://intechbearing.com/products/6316-zz-skf-shielded-radial-ball-bearing
you can also measure the bearing width, thickness and bore then search the internet with the measurements in that order with a x placed between them
2rs means both sides are rubber seals
z means one side has a metal shield and zz means both sides are metal shielded
read the load ratings on the skf, these are impressively strong and quite large
