I have a scored 261 that I'm considering upgrading to the 262xp. I've read about the conversion and the threads say you can use a baileys 262 kit, but I went to Bailey's site and someone asked there if the kit is compatible with the 261. Bailey's said no it's not. Anybody have any insight on this?

Ok, thanks a lot for the links! I guess Bailey's 262 will bolt right on even though they say it wont?

Sure it will - the original cylinders were the same anyway, but the 261 had a domed piston to reduce compression and power output.

........much more restrictive muffler and weaker clutch as well.

Great! I'm new at this and don't want to waste any more cash. Thanks a lot.

I think Troll means the 261 DIDNT have the domed piston, which gives it less compression than the 262XP.

You will feel like you have a totally different saw when finished, and you will know you did it yourself. Good luck

Googspa's post about upgrading his 261 to 262 if he just has a scored piston is a smart move. Not real expensive to do and a big difference in performance over the 261.
Other than not up to snuff with todays anti-vibration there are not many saws in the same cc class will out perform them, but that is just my opinion. When I don't have the bigger saws out that is the one I grab.
I am going to experiment with the base gasket to see if I can gain a bit more, but all I have ever done is mod the muffler and that wakes them up a bit.

so what can you do with a 262 xp? My buddy Brimmstone's got one that rocks, and since he's a hell of a mechanic, can you get a lot out of em?

Seems a little slow to me. My 262 usually does through 18" oak logs all day long if not a little faster but then Treeslayer tends to keep my chains sharp enough to shave with. I'm waiting to get the other one running before I try porting it and seeing what she'll really do.

Same saw stock!

If your saw can cut anywhere near what Timberwolf can make it do your doing bloody well!
I would like him to build me a saw thats for sure!

Mine has been tuned up slightly. Once I get the new P/C for my other one I'll port it and do some real mods to it. When it was checked with a tach it was turning 13100 rpm. As Treeslayer will tell you she screams when she's running. I also use a full chisel non skip chain that Treeslayer has been keeping extremely sharp for me.

My 262XP is getting ported soon as per TWs instruction on another forum and much research, It should have been done already but i was struck down with Man flu ( i think i nearly died lol).
There seems to be no way to get square chain in the UK without importing it or doing it the hard way and starting with round, So I will get some as well eventually!
