We have two huge Maple trees in our back yard that have large roots that lay on top of the ground. We are putting up an above ground pool. The installer will cut the roots out under the pool, and cut them back about 3' from the pool, but says they will grow back, under the pool, in about 2 - 3 years, necessitating removal again. In other words the pool will have to be drained, liner removed, etc.

The only other option I can see is to cut the trees down. Not a happy option.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions?

DO NOT let a pool salesman give you advice on your trees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Get a certified arborist, or at least a knowledgeable tree man out there to look at where the pool guy wants to cut the roots. An on-site evaluation is necessary to reasonably predict the chances of your trees surviving. If the pool guy is going to kill your trees anyway, it may be cheaper to get them removed before the pool goes in. But you need someone OTHER than the pool guy to tell you if the trees might die.
