I was reading in this months Tree Care Industry magazine and it says arborists in Salem, Ore were extremely busy in late 2000 as homeowners tried to complete tree work ahead of a law restricting the removal trees.
A law was passed do the decimation of some neighborhood developers. The law requires a varience to be obtained before more than five trees are removed from a single property. An earlier version of the law would have required town approval for any tree larger than 24 inches in diameter.

Anyone have a law like this in there area? In Denver we have to pull permits on trees lining major streets. Basically its a permit to block the street not to take the tree down.

Thought this was interesting,

Tree removal permits

Here in central Florida, many of the cities are very serious about protecting our trees. Some cities are part of a 'Tree City USA' program and require removal permits for any tree over 8" DBH (Diameter Breast Height-approx. 4' off the ground). Winter Park goes even further on lakefront properties, requiring a map of the property including total square footage of shaded areas in order to get a removal permit. Removing anything other than hazard or dead trees requires replacement based on a percentage of shaded area.
