What causes bar/chain chatter?

Lots of good ideas. Standard practice would be to try a different chain, and other types of wood,

Since it was new-out-of-the-box chain it is surprising. Aggressive cutter 'hook' or depth gauge issues would make more sense if the chain had been filed.

Was the cedar really dry and hard?

Any chance it is caused by those extra long cutters being unable to clear the chips fast enough?
