It bothers me that you own a tree and only own one saw. :)

He he. Sadly, I do only have one tree. But I have a husky 365 a 372 and a home depot model I tend to forget.. Then we move onto stihl with an 021 and the now dead Ms880.. One tree less then a 1/4 acre of land.:D

Because you want a real hotsaw, (and doesn't everyone?) you could incorporate the repairs into a nice engine modification. Hopefully the major parts it needs can be picked up used, and while it's apart the mods can be done.

I am thinking of asking to credit me something for the saw and getting another one. Maybe smaller.

I still am waiting for pictures.
You missed a line in my novel sized posts. I sent the saw out west to get asses and repaired. I am going to ask the shop if they mind sending me a picture of the damage.. We shall see..

Bermie your right on with your reply, that seems to be overlooked here. Its not the friend that broke the saw, he borrowed out a borrowed item!! The fact that he doesn't see the problem here tells me what he thinks of the friendship. If its me, friendship over. Also, I have learned, I never borrow out tools from my business. It always seems to turn out wrong. Pete

He didn't consciously lend the thing. In fact he says he had put it away in his shed so it wouldn't get touched. But the end result is the same. The Little no English speaking guy didn't get the message and used and broke the thing.. How, why, with what? No idea. On purpose, was it defective? I doubt both. End result is the same.I am out a saw I was nice enough to lend you. I thought enough of you to say "add this $1500 to the the other 5k I entrust in your, no questions asked." Your statement about what he thinks of the friendship is dead on in my opinion. I would be very uncomfortable to do anything other then just fix the item. In fact, I would do anything But argue the point. Then again, I don't call many my fiend, and when I do, you can count on me to be there when its 30 out and you need to move your house 3 ft to the left using a shovel. But hey, we live we learn, its a cheap lesson I guess.

not always black and white

I can appreciate your dilemma in so far as trying to understand the ethics of it all. Ultimately I think and loan between friends starts from the position of; you borrow, you break, you buy. Circumstances may change that.

Once it is determined what went wrong it will be a lot easier to assign responsibility.

The onus should be one your friend to prove it was no fault of his [pay a mechanic to test the gas in the carb for oil etc], If it is a grey area he should pay at least half [I would pay in full myself].

If it turns out to your satisfaction that the saw was used perfectly, I personally would not expect a friend of mine to replace it, but thats me. I would expect them to offer and I would allow them to do something like handle the running around, phone calls etc.

From what I have read it sounds like in your friend should be paying in full.

A few examples of similar scenarios I based my above thoughts on.

Recently I lent my stihl Km 130 power pruner to friends who needed it for a project [no agreement on you break you buy]. One of their Temp employees dropped it 75 feet; they sent it in to be fixed. It came back fixed [$200 bill] with stripped gears [obviously not done from falling]. I had to have it repaired for an additional 150, [as it was basically brand new it was covered on warranty] but they offered to pay no questions when warranty was in doubt.
Years ago, I lent a clean $500 car to friend to use well I was in the bush for two weeks. I told him it was eating water so if he is going to use it, keep the rad up. When I came back it had been abandoned on the side of the road in Surrey BC for a week {Canada's Bronx}. Some one had rammed it with a truck and it had graffiti. Sure enough the engine was seized as well, figured out after I bought a 100$ used rad. It was joke of a car to Begin with but now it was ruined. He thought it was a joke. Like you Pitt, I was most disturbed by the fact this was a guy I went through a lot with [schooling, bar fights, military boot camp etc] Ultimately we drifted apart. Who needs enemies with friends like that.
My third relevant experience the shoe was on the other foot. I borrowed a buddies truck to go two miles to drop some gear off. When I got there the engine was on fire. I put the alternator fire out and had the thing towed back to base for 75$. I had to run him around for a day tracking down the part and I helped him fix it. I said I would pay for the new alternator if he wanted but I assured him I did not do anything wrong to his truck. In the end He paid for the part [less then $100] and I payed the towing.

I have seen many a friend get mad at each other for dirty/broken/ abused loaned tools, I just go rent or buy the things.

Someone before said that it's hard to put a price on friendship, but that's exactly what your pal did. And he determined that his and your's was worth less than the cost of a 880.

Besides, the simple fact that he did not even ruin the saw himself takes him out of the discussion with you on why it broke down. He can not know, cause he neglected to watch the borrowed item. He has to clear that with you, and the whole thing about wheater or not the saw was faulty is a discussion he can then run by his employee. But towards you he just have to pay up. What if the guy hadn't been using the saw, but stole it instead. Would that also have been your fault cause the saw was faulty?

your fault. same as loaning money to a friend. every one gets let down give him money if you get it back even better. loan to someone you want to get rid of

Agreed! I really didn't think of it as clear as you wrote it. Its true, I am more floored as to how he has the acorns to actually ????? about the saw in the first place. I would think that would be reserved for a rental house/stranger. But You hit the spike right on the head, probable the same spike they hit with my saw... My 27 years of friendship is worth exactly $100 or less I guess.

Ah, no biggie.. In my Car world, we have the Snap-On VS Mac world. Snap on is more expensive and Mac has more gadget tools like right angle screw drivers, muffler bearing seals.. Some feel the finishing on snap on is well worth the excess $. Then you have the Screw it, a wrench is a wrench crew. They buy Craftsman, Husky, whatever fits and is guaranteed.. I assume these are the Dolmar and Jonson<spell? types you find here..

Being a city boy, you watch tv, watch the local tree guy and if you want bragging rights with your yuppie neighbors, you follow the pro.. I was lucky to acquire one of each, a husky and a stihl.. For my money, I don't see a any huge weight to Power ratio, build quality, or hand feel difference to sway me one way or another.. I will say that I have NEVER seen a professional rig in my are using Husky, and that meant tons to me. I still don't know if that is for any other reason then the stubborn old guy who just wont try anything else.

True story.. I had never dropped a tree and I promised to help a neighbor do just that.. After realizing I may be over my skill level, since the tree needed to be topped and it was touching a house, I called a friend who was a professional tree guy.. HE said sure and went through a list of the items he felt we would need.. when he got to saws, I proudly told him that I had JUST gotten my Husky 372xp and a 365 and a small top handle saw.. He said great, but that we would need to wait until Sun instead of Saturday, because he would need to go Borrow some Stihls before he came over.. And When he got here, I made him try the 365 which he did.. HE said it was a good strong saw. A good strong saw that "didn't seem right" and that I should return on monday.
.. Hahah. So thats that...
Tools matco saw husky!

OK, I see Clint, the words rope, saddle, I am already at a manly disadvantage. I wear a tie, go "horseback" riding, and Love Clint, but do not identify personally, even though I bought the little cigars.:)

With that out of the way, knowing I'm a rookie, hear me out.

I know your messing with your friend, but while we are hijacking the thread....

How Can anybody say that either major saw co is better? I have a great mix of saws that I studied a ton before buying, and if your not some stubborn or excessevly loyal, stuck in your ways, you MUST see that there are great saws in both camps, no?

I will say that Matco is absolutely the worst tools of the bunch by the way. That parts no joke. they feel boxy and terrible, break and have THE worst support. Hell is the matco guy fixed his matco truck with his own tool, that would explain why they are never around.

That's way too risky nowadays, too many folks around that will happily lend their wife, so they will keep nagging about your saw too...

Just say "No, not the saw."

I was watching some saw race video and the winner really loved his new saw. The announcer says "rumor has it that you have an extra bed in your bedroom for that saw". The guy says, " No, the extra bed is for my wife, I sleep with the saw in my bed"... Or something to that effect.

I will agree.. Being a city boy, I can find many a girl who will gladly do me after servicing my friends with little conscience.. Now thats fine but now try finding great service for your saw. Not soo easy!

:biggrinbounce2: SO the moral of the story is, If I am going to allow my Girlfriend to go out and shtoop another guy? I am sure going to check twice to make sure he is a factory certified Stihl Service repairman!:buttkick:

Ethics Professor talking here.

You need some dead serious clarity in this situation: there is no "almost pregnant" with love  . Either eat the $$$$$ , or drop the "friend" :blob2: . Period.

All those long winded posts about "sharing" the cost 50/50 , or "you shoulna lent it out", or "..the friend lent it to the other man" , or " it was going to break anyhow" are just adolescent equivocations (look it up, I don't know what the H it means either :hmm3grin2orange: ).

It is not a hill you want to die on. You'll be mulling the decision to "share" or "forgive" or "excuse" for too many nights of no sex angst:deadhorse: .

Well where the Hell have you been Professor? Yeah its long winded yet its also not easy to lay out in proper thought succession. I am no author.

Its not about forgivness . Its over.. I am paying. There is nothing to forgive. The guy isn't doing it out of malice. He is doing it out of defense. . This is his thought process. Yes, a warped process aposed to my thinking, but still its what he believes. I am still pondering over him declared himself "feeling funny" about the issue of paying for the item only after hearing the cost.
My feeling is that IF where me, I would feel much funnier dealing with a notoriously touchy subject such as money amongst friends, then I ever would Just paying out of pocket. Let me say again, neither of us are taxed for $. I am single and can easily pay the cost. He has affluent and sports a six figure making mate.
The issue is that now that I know his views and his prefrence to debate this over just remedying it, I no longer can feel the same about this person. not due to my loss or a grudge, but because his sentiment towards myself is offensive to me. I gave and treated in this long lived relationship in a manner I felt was mutual and would be gladly reciprocated. I was VERY wrong

Advice?

SCHTOOP is not authorized Stihl. :taped:

Yea perhaps Shtoop was not the member i was referring to.. In fact the name escapes me, but I will say that Your chances with My chick are far greater..FAR GREATER.. if you happen to posses a 120CC German made "house warming" gift for the man of the house. In fact a new 660-880 magnum could keep me from looking or even hearing whats happening up in my bedroom for several hrs.. Very noisy those saws and I like to keep my mind on saw safety Who knows what could happen with a saw that big? I already know what could happen upstairs. ..
