Hi all, been lurking around here for some time. I am making plans to build a OWB to heat my 40 x 60 shop, I have several fuel barrels ranging from 500gal to 300gal. I have a complete machine shop at my disposal as well as welders/plasma cutter to work with. The only thing that is holding me back is deciding on how to build a more efficient unit. Is it worth the extra effort to build a gasifier type of OWB or just go the standard route of fire box in the center of the water jacket, seems theres not much about DIY gasifiers on the net..

Yes it's worth it, imo.

You can make a naturally aspirated gasifier or secondary burn.

My dad and his buddy did it the 70's.

It would burn green popple no sweat with a flame in the secondary combustion chamber that looked like the afterburner on a jet.
