I have an 034av which I purchased used and is almost like new. Would it be worth while to have a ms361, or are they too close in power/handling to make the purchase worth it? I was thinking of buying a 260 for some cad relief, as I already own a 357xp, a 7900 and a 575xp. Thanks guys.

The 034 is a great saw but it doesn't have quite the power, revs or the ant-vib that the 361 does. The 034 can be converted to 036 quite easily and that will give you more power.

I really wouldn't get the 361 to cure CAD unless you sell the 034.

MS260, 346XP or 5100 might be better cures for CAD given your current lineup. (or maybe even the MS200)

I agree 100%. I bought as 361 for around $600. A few months later, I found an 034AV at a yard sale for little money. The performance of the 2 are so close, that I ended using the 034 almost exclusively while the pristine 361 sat on the shelf. I couldn't bear having investment sitting there doing nothing, so I traded the 361 for a 440.

I have had both, or, rather, an 036 which in performance is gonna be about equal to the 361 [same displacement, etc.]. The 034 is a good running saw and the differences are, to me, minimal. So, unless you want a different saw for the heck of it, keep the 034 and think about the next step up from the 361 to a 70 cc or thereabouts. I'd have bought another 034 but by that time they weren't available and the 036 had taken their place, so to speak. I am cutting the same size wood with the 036 I always have, and run a 20" bar rather than the 18" I ran on the 034, but both saws did really well in the same wood. I am very happy with the 036, was quite happy with the 034, and am now also running a 441 with which I am also happy. Keep the 034.

The much better AV, high rpm performance and accelleration of the 361 make a lot of differense to some of us......

..those that bog the saw down anyway may not care.

"only if it's a super... 034AV has a different stroke"

Not so sure on that or, I was VERY lucky! I put an 036 cylinder / piston on a 034 av saw. (at least I thought so!)

The 034 super, 034 AV and 036 all have the same 34 mm stroke according to Acres site.

034 and 034S -The stroke is the same, the bore is different..
034S and 036 - same bore and stroke

Someone is confusing this with the 024 and 024S... same bore different stroke.

The latest model 034 the ones built after the supers were also I believe the same bore as the 036. They didn't say electronic quickstop after the 034 and have been my favorite of all the 60 cc saws. Although all the ones I ever had were front chain adjuster instead of side.... The older 034's did have side adjusters.

I have some stihl data at work to check, but i'm pretty sure that if you have a non 034S with a bigger bore, someone messed with it...

The side adjuster definitely superceded the front. The 034S I owned said "Electronic Quickstop".

From the manuals:

034: Stroke 34mm, Bore 46mm, 56.5cc, 4.1 Bhp
036, 036QS: Stroke 34mm, Bore 48mm, 61.5cc, 4.6Bhp
361: Stroke 34mm, Bore 47mm, 59cc, 4.6Bhp

So it looks like stroke is all the same but 361 produces the same output as 036 will smaller displacement.

I have had 3 of the 034 that didn't say electronic quickstop on the tags and they were all identical. Transparent tanks, front adjusters. I did rebuild one once long ago but can't remember the bore. Here is the serial number off my latest one you can look it up 227807932. Tell me what year it it. The older ones that I had were always side adjusters that said electronic quickstop on the tag. I don't believe that the cylinder covers were swaped. For sure not on all 3.

The 034av is like new condition with the original carboard box it came with. I bought it for $50.00 so I think I did ok. I guess I'll have to post the serial number of my 034av, It does to my knowledge have the side tension chain adjuster. It looks like I should keep the saw, although I will say it is rather tempermental in terms of flooding easily if not set just right(choke adjustment/etc.) it can be a hard starter. My other newer saws start much easier and don't seem as tempermental as the 034av. I do have an ms200 and it's a great little saw, great power for it's size.
