Are the after market dual port mufflers for the MS460 OK or should I attempt to buy an OEM part? Is it best to buy a complete muffler or just the dual port cover?

All you really need is the dual port cover, the back shell is the same on either, as long as the one you have is solid. After market parts are almost always made from leess quality matewrials but generally are servicable for a few years or even longer depending on the amount of use. Some tin mufflers rust worse if not used, some burn out quicker with useage, hard to tell if they are the best but usually can`t go wrong with OEM.

it is so simple and free to mod the factory muffler and flow more air then the dual port cover.

a few drillbits a drill and about 30 minutes of your time.

if you dont have the tools im sure a buddy or maybe girlfriend does maybe the wife can get a hold of these tools.

30 bucks to me is waste of money when this is so gosh darn easy to do. its just metal think of like wood, you just gota get it outa the way.

this is three 3/8" holes
if you had a dremel this could be opend up much more.. you could even drill abunch of 1/8" holes if thats the biggest drill bit you have.

remove the spark screen so it doesnt get damaged. remove the muffler from the saw to. a vice would be nice to hold the muffler while drilling but not necesarry

It can be fun... not knockin' it. :)

But I'd rather have the factory dual port than a stock cover with a bunch of cobbled up holes drilled in it...

But again... that's just me.

LOL

my dealers DP cover is ridiculous. If your a hack then buy the cover, if you have some skill then do it yourself. Sometimes it takes some messing with, its only metal. If you have a tig your golden, mig works. some braze it...

Hack...

This ain't my frist rodeo amigo...

There are lots of hacked up and cobbled up retarded lookin' mufflers around here... Glad you guys don't cut where I cut... you can take your "port jobs" and "muffler mods" and have fun in the cul-de-sac...

I know it's "fun" and stuff... but in the real world... my neigbor could care less if my 044 will beat a 372... modded or not. Just for the record... and I've said it a hundred times... I'm a stock saw type of guy. Oh I have my share of trigger time on modded saws... they are awesome... but it ain't cuttin' peckerpoles on the farm n'either...

I give my opinion... some say I'm "harsh"... and beat up newbies... well I look at it from a real world perspective...

So to the OP... me personally, I would get a factory dual port muffler for the saw and be called a "hack" because I apparently am not mechincaly inclined enough to rat hole 2 holes in a muffler with a drill.

Or you can take the other approach. Do a clean mod that looks factory, and shows some skill. :)

Gotta agree with gary that a cobbled muff mod really turns me off. But a nice on like mine really looks good and I can tune it to run and sound the way I like it!

To some of us doing our own thing is what chainsaws are all about,to others only OEM will do, its all good and would be a sad day if we all agreed on every point brought up. I like to port the pistons and cylinders, mod the mufflers and carbs etc, also like to keep them stock appearing just to fool some of the guy`s I cut with. They don`t take it too well when I can wup one of their larger cc saws with a considerable smaller modded saw. Most that they can see is a slightly altered muffler and hear the throaty roar coming from them. It`s not long before they are asking what makes your saw perform so much better. LOL

This is exactly what I'm talkin' about... :)

I went the both route on my 044. I use the DP cover, and enlarged the existing outlet to a nice oval that looks right and would be hard to tell its not stock unless its a saw buff. Plus I dont go without a screen because I dont want crap inside my engine, and thats added protection.

I consider a muffler mod as much art as function. I can combine both, its a huge part of my chainsaw hobby.

I see these posts of people drilling 10 holes or so in the front of an 044 muffler or an 066 muffler and it makes me sick.

Those muffler mods look all great an stuff but how often do you guys cut in the summer? Ill stick with the factory cover because you dont get all the exhaust and heat blowing in you face. The whole mod thing dont mean that much to me only that the saw cuts better.

A muffler mod if done correct , if anything gets the exhaust out away from you and the saw quicker. We dont turn the deflectors around so the exhaust blows back on us. LOL
