:confused2: instead of 80% Should I make my Exhaust hole The exact same size as exhaust port since Screen blocks 20% flow and I want screen?

Makes sense to me. I'd like to hear from the pros. on this, though.

I usually make mine the size of the deflector. I've been using the 288 deflectors so it's aroun 7/8"x3/4".

Jeez, I'm surprised no answers on this. Lots of talk about porting, pop-ups, duration, and all kinds of micro-measure type stuff.
I thought this would get a quick, definitive answer. Like I said, your math makes sense to me but I don't know for sure.

I just take the muffler off and use the screw holes where the muffler bolts to to secure a screen over the exhaust port. ;)

I just want screens so stuff dont blow up in the cylinder when Im trucking down the road.

I made the hole in my husky 350 as big as possible under the screen footprint. This worked out to about the size of the exhaust port. I need to keep the screen as I cut on federal lands and a spark arrestor is required. This saw only has a factory exhaust hole the size of a pencil so the difference is huge. Deflector had to be cut of to access the area under the screen to cut the exhaust port sized hole in the muffler top. Then the deflector opening was not big enough so i tig welded up a new deflector with and opening the size of the port. My buddys call it the big mouth saw. It screams now with a cool sounding exhaust note. No fancy math here, just figured out the square area and used it as a guideline. Much faster in hard pinion pine stumps of about 20". The saw spools up almost violent, its amazing, I do not think you will be far off from optimum with your plan as it worked well for me. :msp_thumbup:

What saw? Pic please.

My 1st time foolin' with it

i took the screen out and left it out. popped the limiters out of carb and re-tuned while the saw was under a load. The saw still fires up just fine but seems to take a little longer to "warm up". This simple "mod" seems to have brought my little saw to life. I guess when i get another season or two on it I might look into cuttin' it open some and see what that gets me.

There's not an defiant answer to this. Go to maddens chainsaw website and read their section on carb tuning
