Check for a Schrader valve (like a tire valve stem) at the spark plug thread end. If it doesn't have one, it will be adding volume to your combustion chamber and give a false low reading.

Is snap-on the only one built this way? How much is it?

I have a cheaper one from autozone. Accurate so far and a fraction of the cost of snap-on.

I think they work pretty well but don't last. I had one that lasted about close to a year, then an O'Reilly's that lasted a couple of months. I bought a Snap-On a couple of years ago and have tested more saws than ever and it hasn't missed a beat.

I think the best way to check how accurate they are from time to time. Take them to your mechanic and just ask him to test theirs against yours. Or if you have a good relation ship with your saw dealer just ask them for a quick check. My cheapies are as accurate as a mechanic I know who has his calibrated every year or if it is dropped.

I have a Snap-on, Lisle, and cheap Bailey brand. The Snap-on and Lisle are both very close.
If it comes down to $... I wouldn't hesitate on a Lisle.

I have a snap-on that I had since the early 80s. If I had to buy a new one I would take a good look at OTC. Most people have never heard about this company. If you do a search you will see that OTC supply's mac, matco, cornwell and lots of other companys.

I originally bought an Actron because I needed one, it was around $30-$35. Some time later I found a Snap-On in a pawn shop I visit regularly. It had been there well over a year and I had never seen it, snagged it for $35.
