Black gray thin ring would be even more of an anomaly. Most of us here had only seen them as 3400 and 3800s. Never a 3700, but we do find 3700 red black saws. Get some complete saw pics and the 358.xxxx number

I'm away from home until at least Wednesday night, so I can't get the Sears number at the moment - but here are pics of the saw, including the rings as seen through the exhaust port:

Wait now.. Can you just slide the depth probe part of a vernier in ? Hmm

Yes...Open the caliper at least several inches, then put the tail end through and against the far side of the cyl. Should give you the same reading on the scale, whether its dial or digital.

I gotta say, Nothing will surprise me about what you might find with these saws from Canada..:D Possible to see all kinds of labeling and combos. I think Nik (Fatguy) whos from Ont. said he has seen 4000's actually labeled as 3400 up there. So who knows.

Gregg,

Just another observation, and this is just my thoughts & experience with this series of Poulans. And NOTHING is set in stone..LOL. That it looks like your saw has a Windsor type bar on it, and still carrying the Vangaurd chain. (I know could have been replaced at some time.) But "most" 3400's I have seen, down here anyway, came with the banana nose safety tip bars. The ones with Windsor Speed Tip bars were "usually" 3700's or 4000's.

Just my observations and thoughts over the years from these saws, that I have seen in the US. I have never owned a Canadian model, so just a big wild ass guess on part on some of this. ;) Down here, its rare to see a 3400 with chain brake. But, up there its common.

Gregg,

I just last week replaced the vanguard chain with a full chisel.. Can't wait to see how it cuts!

As for the actual Poulan 3400, I can't wait to come across one. I've never laid eyes on one. I want one of these rocking the green.

Most folks use a swizzle stick, a small skewer stick, or other type of material inserted into the exhaust port and against the opposite wall of the cylinder that will provide an indentation for a fairly accurate bore measurement after the piston is brought up against it at the top of the port to make a mark.

Seeing you are located in Halifax NS, reminds me of the time, I think was 1978, my best buddy and I took a two week motorcycle camping trip up through there. Went through Maine, New Brunswik, and went all the way around Nova Scotia, mostly by the coast. Had pretty decent weather most of the trip, except the day we came through Halifax.. Wasn't much to see of the harbor as it was foggy as heck and raining. LOL

Gregg,

Good point Gregg, I didn't realize it was a Canadian saw. I also just noticed "PRO" on the recoil. That saw could be a 4000. No ci or ccs anywhere?

The one pic does show the recoil decal as 3.4 56cc. But, after hearing what Nik had to say one time, it likely doesn't mean much. Could actually be a larger CC model. Kind of like you can label or advertise it being at least that...but not less... LOL Its a mystery Joe.

Gregg,

Looking back in the Poulan thread, It seems most of the old posts are still there, but minus the pics...:( I guess they all went bye bye with the hack that took place couple years ago. Thats a shame. I remember before I actually joind AS, I was a lurker for some time..LOL There was a fellow that totally rebuilt a 3400 that he painted orange & black. But that was a true 3400. Thats what got me to join and get into these a little better.

If I remember right, the 4000 that Nik built for his father, he painted blue. I could be wrong. But you are right Joe, I do remember of seeing a pic, and I'm sure it was from Nik, of a Canadian labeled 3400 that was actually a 64cc 4000.

Gregg,

Here is one to throw another monkey wrench into the discussion. LOL This was posted by a member (gonecountry) from Nova Scotia, back in 09. Nothing was really said about it, history wise. Looks like original paint etc. But the the decal on the recoil looks typical from American versions. But I cant read the fine print on it.

Gregg,

Leaving alone the fact that you made that trip the year I was born (sorry..), I will say that would have been a great ride. Sorry about the Halifax weather. When the fog decides to show up, it can take days for it to clear.

In 2013, the wife and I went down from Montreal, through to Vermont, New Hampshire, and then up through Maine and back home to Halifax - loved it. Never dreamt the Appalachians would rival the Rockies so thoroughly as they did. White Mountain National Forest is amazing.. interesting to see all the Mass and NY plates.. weekenders, hey?

I'm also a big fan of that show"Downeast Dickering", and I lament that that kind of bartering doesn't happen so much in Nova Scotia. For being very close and quite similar in a lot of respects (Maine and Nova Scotia) the two places sure do have their differences.

Oh yeah, it says 3.4 / 56 cc. I've been running under the assumption it's a 3700 in 3400 clothing. Can't wait to try the caliper depth probe / swizzle stick out on it and report back with dimensions.. what if top end is different though? Assume some have different depth to lower/raise the cc accordingly for various models?

I *can* say this.. The saw would not out-cut my 58cc Pioneer 1200A nor my XL-76 (also 58cc) - BUT - it mostly kept up, with the 2" larger bar, *and* vanguard chain.

All I've done with the craftsman is remove the spark arrestor. It is tuned very well. I run fresh mid-grade and a mix of 35:1 in it. Not synthetic, but quality low ash oil. It is a great running saw. I've got 2-3 cords of firewood left to junk, (some of it 16" diameter) and I can't wait to try again with the brand new Oregon full chisel chain I put on it.

Yes, I hope you got to drive up to the top of Mt. Washington, there in NH. That place is amazing! My first trip up there was by motorcycle, but been up several times since with car. Even up there with my Jeep once..LOL

The only disappointing thing about my trip to Nova Scotia, was not seeing any Moose..!! LOL
