I've got a nice Kolbenschmidt piston out of a certain Land Rover with a lovely crack on the edge of the bowl from too high combustion pressure too. (too much advance, too much fuel even though EGT's were never excessive, sort of...)

It'd still be going up and down (maybe) if someone hadn't lifted the head to swap the head gasket.

Hmmm did someone maybe turn up the boost a little bit? 50psi will do that to ya lol

Quick Q for young Ben the Stihl guru.

A mate is the local Stihl shop tech (part time, he has his own small engine business) and he's had two 390's come in the last week with holed pistons.
not just seized, but holes burnt through the crown.
He said Stihl have been less than helpful, have just sent replacement parts (warranty)
He said the fuel tested ok and the customers assured him they had been mixing at 50:1 with Stihl oil "and it just happened..."
He asked me (I know, getting desperate ! :D) and all I can think is just too damned lean on the HS, AKA operator error, but I said I know someone ! just in case it's something odd like miles too high pop off/a batch of dodgy carbies or blocked/dodgy tank vents.

Any ideas ?
Just confirming my suspicions and double checked my fault analysis book. Pre ignition either spark plug with too low a heat range or fuel with too lower octane rating

I had a guy bring over an 11 month old MS660 on Sunday night. Wouldn't run properly. I pull the muffler and she's scored to the sh*thouse. He needed it first thing yesterday morning so I whack a new BB top end on it for him and yesterday arvo he takes the rooted top end into the local Stihl dealer to show him what's up. This guy works his saw pretty hard milling and cutting Redgum. Anyway local Stihl dealer tells him that it's simply worn out from too much use. He had a bit of ammunition from me and told him it's not worn out but was either running lean or should be running more oil than 50:1 - needless to say the dealer had fitted a new carby to this saw not long ago and charged nearly, I hope you're all sitting down, $650!!! Stihl dealer says it's no way it was running lean and that if it was him he'd be running even less oil in it than 50:1. He is adamant that this guy has simply worn the saw out from too much use. The saw looks like new by the way. He has not stood by the warranty once in the 11 months since he bought it.

Thanks christ we have a decent resident Stihl dealer like Bennyus Maximus. If they were all floggers like this guy we'd be screwed. Guy with the MS660 also ran some pricing he'd been paying through this Stihl dealer past me and he was getting charged anywhere up to 50% MORE than the RRP. The Waikerie Stihl dealer is a bloody nice bloke, but this peanut takes the cake.

Benny for crying out loud open a Stihl shop in the Riverland!!!

Don't sell your self short Matt, I'm just a busted up ex footballer who spent most of his life working way out in forests miles away from any one wearing out 4x4s every 4 years or so.
"Cutty Cutty " is a bit like Lasseter's Reef, there somewhere but not seen but, plenty have tried to find it.

You undersell yourself Neil :)
One day, on your death bed (assuming you die before I do!), I'll bring my wheelchair in and drop a loop of Cutty Cutty on your bedsheets for you to fondle. That way you can die happy, or simply bleed to death in front of me due to the awesome sharpness...

I'm a nice bloke like that.

Best thing I've read about detonation and two strokes.
Mostly because these guys are working on a budget that gives them a chance to prove stuff right or wrong.

Did they drive it into the surf, leave it for a week then retrieve it ?

A friend has a nice 47 Troopy her and her partner use for towing their horses but far too many have gone to god with the dreaded tin worm. :(

Funny part is, someone had totally repainted the vehicle at some stage. I can only assume they used seawater to prep it.

He should have got a carb under warranty for sure. Obvious things like wear and tear are not covered but at 11 months that doesn't sound right. I would get him if he gets no resolve to contact Stihl oz about it

Apparently the carby was "his fault"...
Honestly mate it's a joke. Like I said the other day he's quoting $470 for an 84DL loop of 36RD when Stihl RRP is about $330 or something.
He's been taking this guy for an absolute ride for ages. It actually took little old me to wake him up to the fact he's been getting shafted.
You'd know who I'm talking about too and it isn't the dealer in Waikerie...

For starters milling hardwood is hard on any saw producing fine dust instead of chips, any man who says run 50 / 1 has not ever done that kind of work daily as it makes the saw run too hot.
For a trained tecko / dealer to suggest running less than 50 / 1 should have his position revoked as he is not doing the manufacturer or his community any favours, in fact he is degrading the saws in question by saying they are not up to the job.
The dealer is correct in saying the saw was worn out, trouble is he in the man responsible for wearing it out before its time.
If the dealer in question changed the carbi, he would of set its tuning at its recommended setting which is de tunned from optimum so he has further shot himself in the foot.

Sorry for your man Matt who brought it to you but he must be nieve to think this ''professional advise'' he is receiving is right and in the best interest of the machine in question.

Simple advise for hard working saws is,,,, run clean air filters (cleaned multiple times per day if necessary), run sharp chains with good bars, and 25 /1 mix with a suitable oil and clean fuel.
It also sounds like you don't have a timber industry down your way either, having many saws falling daily across the region does help keep dealers honest and of coarse gives them more regular income from sales and repairs.

Thanks for the response Neil. When info comes from you I actually listen and really enjoy reading what you write.
Not like all these other wallys in the Dribble Thread. I don't listen to them :)

Guys quick one what's the going price for a 25ft roll of stihl semi chisel? Trying to figure out if its worth making up my own.

evening folks,,,,,, does anyone know who the oz distributers are for "Seiko Simpla flex Couplings" (rubber flex joint which joins a centrifugal clutch to a lay shaft in my aplication).
I can buy one direct from NZ but they said we should have a rep in each state here.
