Read in a recent thread a couple simple questions and comments about the HD filter for our 6400/7900 variants.

As I'd just a couple weeks ago received my own long-awaited kit from my local Dolmar dealer and have yet to install it, I figured some of you would be interested in what's included and in posting up some pics, help answer some of those questions.

If there's any part of the kit you have a specific question about or you'd like a detailed picture of, please let me know and I'll try to post it up. This kit was heading to Cottle Lane today, but I'll hold off sending it until Monday in case y'all need more pics.

That's a good question, Brad. Unfortunately, I don't know whether it would fit a 7910 or not as I'd ordered it for my 6400. I will phone the dealer I bought it from and see if he can answer that question. Hang tight.

Ok got a call in to Woodbury Mower, left a message for owner Kevin to call me back. He's out, they expect him back in 30mins or so. Will let ya know what he says once I get off the horn with him.

Roger that, Carl.

Brad, I've just spoken with Kevin, says the book shows that kit fits saws 6400 through 7900 and 7910.

Let me know if you'd like me to order one through him, though we have dealers on the site here whom I'm sure would appreciate your business too.

Do you know if there's a performance gain in doing so?
I can not answer that honestly. That's on my list. My initial test have said no. But the filter system is way nicer. However there's a pretty good bottle neck in the elbows. When I get home tonight I'll try and take pics of the 2 different elbows.

Looking forward to learning more about it and the differences between 'em! Thanks Carl!

This filter is a nice improvement on this saw. But I like to use mine without the prefilter, I think it's a little overkill.

Agreed, Guillaume. Though I wonder how hard it is to knock the debris out from those pleats without the prefilter?

you wont notice any power improvement until you get to a 79-85cc size saw (if even then). Filtration looks to be the same as a OEM felt. I actually see less fine particulate in the intake neck with the OEM non-HD felt fitler. This is several hard days of use and looking through several dozen customer saws. and yes all filters were down tight as they could be.

Also the glue holding the paper element to the base of the HD filter assmebly was known to be bad in some of the older HD kits. I have since seen an improvement in the glue and the filters staying together. I'm just saying that people putting them on should attach their HD filter to the saw and give it a good bump with their fist to make sure the glue holds. I was lucky enough to check mine every couple hours and caught mine right after it fell off... I used industrial Hot Melt used in counter top assembly to glue mine back together.

It's also been observed if you are cutting soft woods that produces lighter saw dust/chips, your filter may clog quicker. If you keep the felt tube (pre-filter) off the paper element it will be easier to take your filter off mid-day and tap the dust out of the paper element. I've run my 7901 with and without the prefilter and have noticed no difference in cleanliness of my intake tube.

Here's some pics of both styles. The restricttion is how much smaller the curve of the elbow is. However is it a restriction because it's no smaller than where the elbow hooks to the carb.

Here is my $0.02. Personally I think it hurts performance slightly. Going from the standard filter to the hd kit every saw I have installed them on needed leaned out just a bit.

Throw that pre filter away. The fines slip past it and into the paper filter pleats.....then the pre filter holds them there effectively plugging the filter pretty quickly.

The poor glue issue was resolved long ago and any kit you buy today won't have that issue.

On to the color issue since I was just asked about this today. Hd filter comes with the shiny black cover.
7900 red cylinder cover is nla
Shiny black cover only fits saws with left side decomp.
Matt black cover has the right side decomp.

What that means is if you have a 7910 the cylinder cover will be flat black and the air filter cover will be shiny black
