Just thought it would be a cool question to ask.

How many cord a year do you split with an axe? I do not own a log splitter. This year I didn’t start cutting trees down until the beginning of April. From the beginning of April to today (about 6 months) i have just over 6 cords split by axe and about another 4 cords ready to split.

And i didn’t do ANY cutting or splitting for about a 1-1/2 month in the hot summer time.

Up to 4 cord a year. The wood shed is 11x8 then I stack about 5 feet high. Gotta keep that thing full and have a small stack in the garage to start the season. Mainly use a fiskars x27 accompanied by a wedge and 10 lb sledge.

I think splitting is less work and easier than cutting down trees and transporting them back to the house.

Axes are for chopping, mauls are for splitting. Split 20-30 face cord a year for 20+ years, went to a log splitter 4 years ago. Still use a maul and wedges to break up large rounds.

Yeah I’m going to have to disagree there’s lots of splitting axes at the stores.

I would MUCH rather swing my X27 all day than a maul.

Hell, last Saturday i split almost a cord of black locust and cherry with my X27 to get my holz hausen started.

All of it - between 12 and 16 cord a year depending on the weather.

Is it cheating if I split all straight grained Red Oak? 90% with the Fiskars, but an old re-handled hardware store maul if anything gets stubborn, or is too big to lift off the ground.

I would like to think that hand splitting straight grained wood is a pretty comparable speed as to running it through a splitter that I could buy at tractor supply. I dont know for sure, but the swing of an axe seems quicker than cheap splitter.
