I am working on a little Echo chainsaw, trying to optimize it....I took off the muffler and got rid of all the "webbing" in the baffle(?). I also ground back the shroud over the exhaust hole some to reduce flow restriction. Maybe that needs to be done more(???). I tried it with just that and noticed some improvement. I know some guys drill holes straight into the front of the muffler. But I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing before I do that. What is the best pathway for the exhaust? Should I do more to this muffler? Thanks for the help....

That webbed part is the cat, you can knock that out and the deflector should just be spot welded, break it apart and you’ll know which side to NOT reinstall. Don’t forget to tune, those saws like a good muffler mod and fuel.

Thanks, BGE541....since posting I've been reading non-stop on the forum....I did a bit more, but was afraid to break the muffler apart....

The catalytic stuff taken out....

The front of the muffler with the baffle showing....I was surprised at the heavy sturdiness of this muffler.

I drilled and filed a hole in the baffle to line up with the outer exhaust port....Again the wall of the baffle was surprisingly about 1/16" thick....

With just that being done, I noticed some improvement. I will see about opening things up even more, as you suggested...And re-tuning....

Looks good, the little deflector that has the “1800” on it, get it to come apart and you’ll see the part you will want to reinstall. Keep us posted.
