There are a lot of top ends being replaced and a majority of them get damaged by conditions that lead to overheating which causes excess piston expansion and the resulting damage. What we need is a simple add on device to protect the engine from overheating damage when the cylinder head gets into the danger zone. I'm thinking a thermocouple washer under the sparkplug (use to have them on modified snowmobiles) that could be made to operate a grounding switch in parallel with the saw's kill switch that would just shut the engine off when it was getting too hot. I don't have access to machine shop or lab facilities anymore so I'm out of the picture.
 
If you have a way in to your flywheel side of your or rewind side of chainsaw you are trying to cool.put a small 1" hole between carb compartment and flywheel side to force air forward head more with alittle sheild like a turbo and always mix oil correctly .Also you should always give saw break when doing bigger cuts take out of cut Reve it up and let it breath
 
Scale down a dirtbike engine. Water cooling allows more port timing to the extreme. The heat has to go somewhere. Looking at the ported mods on the smaller sized saws liquid cooling is next. Maybe they can keep the weight down to 12 lbs. electric fan. Thermo syphon cooling system no pump. The cooling can be run off the flywheel.fan. It’s the only next thing I can see happening as the future in saws?

Thought, When I was working on big dc voltage dynamometers we tested liquid ac motors which were water cooled scaled down machines. The problem with the ac motors was the heat. But being less weight with the same torque/power you could add a chiller and liquid cooling.
 
Scale everything down. More plastics.? A mini radiator cooled by the fins on the flywheel. Nothing is perfect when the design goes from paper to the real world been there done that.
 
How about getting rid of the engine all together and using a kyber crystal to produce a beam of light to cut the tree

As in laser and burn your way through? Fire risk man!
Now you could cut down most any tree with a concentrate jet of high pressure water.........o_O
 
You could always just invent a computer controlled carb that reads the mixture and automatically compensates for lean conditions....... oh.... wait a minute........
Autotune is overly complex, expensive and often introduces faults that many dealers can't fix, let alone the average home mechanic. It also has limits to what it can compensate for and top ends are still being destroyed from overheating conditions. My thinking is, there is and probably always will be conditions that cause a saw to overheat so if overheating is going to happen, lets just shut the engine off before damage occurs.
 
Such a system should be on every Saw, it wouldn’t cost the saw manufacturers much
if they wanted to do it, but if saws lasted sales figures would go way down, parts sales too.
 
what if you made a coil of tubing that wound around in between the jug fins. bottom to top then to a small radiator that is mounted on the vent frame for the flywheel. use a oval shape on the end of the flywheel assembly to squeeze a tube and pump the fluid like a peristalic pump.
