My 72 is a leaf spring truck too .

Even on the late model 14 bolt, the spring pads were in the wrong spots. The frames are a little wider on the newer trucks, so I had to move the pad location inboards a bit. This truck is a hodge-podge of different parts anyway, so originality is of zero concern.

While I was at it, I did a shackle flip and got rid of the horrible 6" lift blocks the previous owner had. Even the little 350 was causing all sorts of axle wrap. Another negative consequence of the lift blocks, is it allowed springs to flex more than they should. The spring packs were actually impacting the side of the frame at full articulation, eventually putting cracks on both sides...hence the plates on the side of the frame.

Looks sweet.
Is the cardboard a mock up of the shackle bracket. Did you buy those, or build them.
Back in the day I did quite a few custom motor swaps, people always told me, you can't put that engine in that, but I have a grinder, Sawzall, torch, and a welder, why can't I 😃.

It's a mock up of the bump-stop brackets I made. I'm still not sure if I'll use the brackets I made or go a different route.

I wish I could say I made those shackle brackets lol...I got them before I bought my plasma. Even now that I have all the tools to do it, they're one of those things that I can buy cheaper than what I consider my time is worth spent making them. A semi-local shop makes that kit...they've got some crazy rigs that they've built. Guys will go in there with a brand-new Wrangler/pickup/whatever other 4wd and just spend big $$$ for them to trick it out. Fabrication too, not just bolt on stuff.

Not really any motor swaps, but my biggest vehicle fabrication project was a straight-axle-swapped Toyota pickup. I was dirt poor at the time and my skills aren't what they are now, so I could do a way better job nowadays.

Passed a guy scrounging on the roadside today. He had a trunk full of small rounds and zogger wood and was trying to wrestle in about an eight foot section with a fork in it. All in the trunk of a crown vic 😧. Had to give him an A for effort.

You didn’t stop and help?

And tell him all about a thread he’d fit into perfectly?

I could recoup my money if I bought the dyna 60 .

Looking for a Dyna 60 is also not an easy task .

I think you mean Dana 60.

This is under my 1971 Travelall. It was a heavy half ton stock, I swapped this under.

It’s a Power Lok limited slip, the best of the limited slips.

You guys and your sweet old trucks. Makes me a little jealous. Can't find them here in the rust belt for reasonable money. I've thought of going west or south to get a nice 80s K20 4×4. The problem is if I get one I still couldn't drive it from November to the end of April. It would rot out in 5 years if I would.

That was my original plan, but the disc brake 14s (I think they're AAMs now) are cheap and plentiful. Except for the low-hanging pumpkin, they're better axles than the Dana 60 too IMO.
Dana 60 are great, for the front of a truck. Don't have much business being a rear axle imo, at least not in a heavy duty application. I've been eyeing axles out of an 05 and up f550 for my 92 crew cab. Super Dana 60 front axle, and I can't recall what the rear axles is, but they are beefy and I can get any part on planet earth for pretty cheap.

I'm still rocking the HD Dana 44 on the front of my 72, but would put a d60 front if I found a deal on the right one. My old man has a passenger drop Dodge D60 in the front of his 63 GMC he's building. It was formerly to a dually truck, but now set up to go with a single wheel.

Yep they worked good. Still have a closed knuckle version with hydro assist in my 73 f250. No complaints with it. No intention of swapping it either lol.

Just from my experience those are hard to find. I live in the southwest in Southern New Mexico and some of the lower priced ones are beat to heck. A good one is gonna be extra high priced. If you get a beater you can restore it and while you got it apart you can do a really thick job of undercoating on a the rust prone areas. might be a good project for you in a heated garage in the wintertime. There is alot of older 4x4 trucks here for cheap, but there also on the doorstep of hammered. Also check impound auction at the Border Patrol they get some decent ones on occasion from smugglers and coyotes

I got both of mine over 10 years ago, just before they went for bookoo bucks. Both of mine are/were beaters...I've yet to tear into it, but my '71 k2500 attracted me to how original it was and the cool options it had...I only paid $500 for it. My '72 k20 that I'm working on right now, was running/driving when I bought it, but most of it was hack work. The cab was roached, it was full of questionable mods, and the electrical was nightmare. I paid $2500 for that one. Now one in similar condition is probably going for 4x that amount.

Well, you’re talking about a bigger truck. Of course the D60 is too small for the rear, it’s also too small for the front of a 550. My IH 1 ton has a Dana 70 in the front. A Dana 60 is perfect for the rear of a 3/4 ton.

Why would auto correct make it Dyna weird

Edit :Think I know why I’ve been on a Harley site often this past month planning my trip to Laconia Bike Week . It’s the 100th anniversary

I had to look this up, Dyna didn’t mean anything to me before your post.

I built a little tower welded to the spring top plates and retained the bump stop position but used beefier bumps.
The trick was setting the position so everything lined up in all circumstances of wild articulation...much trial and error before burning it in.
