I could possibly buy this saw for a few hundred from a guy at work. He doesn't know what size it is but just that he has a 25" b&c on it and it cuts nice. Acre's has 4 models of this saw listed. That is exactly what the top plate says. What size and weight is this saw and is it worth $300-$400 in good condition.

Thanks,
Matt

87cc. Nearly the same saw as a 056 Super. Only 2mm smaller piston than the 056 Mag II. Mine will pull a 36" bar no problem. Here's the thread where I built mine. LINK
Lakeside has a great thread full of info on a 056 build as well. Most all the same info applies. The 045 came in three different cc sizes, with the Super being the largest.

I see brad is currently looking at this post, I would trust his advice. I don't know how to tell the difference besides checking the cylinder size. Maybe Lakeside or another stihl expert can help. If the saw runs good and has good compression, I would spend a couple hundred bucks. Check Ebay for the going rate. The search button will also provide good information.

I believe the 045 has a 50mm bore while the 045 Super has a 54mm bore. The 056 is 52mm and the 056 Mag II is 56mm. I don't believe the 56mm jug will fit on the other models. If yours is truely a 045 Super, it's 38mm stroke, 54mm bore with 87cc displacement. I believe max no-load RPMs is 12,500. They cut great for being such an old saw.

PM me your email if you'd like an IPL for the saw.

I haven't bought it or anything. Friend at work says he is getting too old for the saw to run all the time. I haven't even seen it run yet. Acres puts any of them around 17 lbs. That would seem heavy to run as my all the time saw. My other saws are Craftsman and Poulan and I'm looking for a saw around 60cc. This one might be too much saw.

It'd have to be might clean to pay "several hundred" for it though. The 056 Mag II goes for more than the 045. At least pull the muffler cover and check out the piston. The jug is no longer available new. I bought one from a member here and put new rings in mine.

He said $300-$400 off the cuff, if I am interested we'll get down to brass tacks later. Wanted to do a little research before I commit to anything.

The saws I'm used to are probably around 11 lbs. Anything in that size would probably seem like an lead weight attached to my arms.

I would buy it anyways, if you keep hanging around here, you will develop chainsaw disease. You will never have enough chainsaws is the norm around here.

+1. For a decent price, I'd never turn down one of the older Stihl big saws in good shape. Buy it and get a smaller saw later.

Last year, I traded back a near-new 460 for a 361. I later found an 034AV in excellent condtion for $36 at a yard sale. Very close in performance to the 361. If I'd kept the 460, I'd now have an 034 and a 460 which is a better combo than an 034 and a 361. Did that make sense?:dizzy:

The 045 is 50mm, LINK, but the 056 is 52mm, LINK. Both the 045 Super and 056 Super are 54mm and the 056 Mag II is 56mm.

Just dug up 2 operators manuals for the 045. The older one specifies a 50mm piston. The newer version, which did not yet mention the Super, specifies a 52mm piston. Stihl sure covered a lot of ground with this family of saws when you compare the first 045AVs and the 056 MagIIs.

But the Super is 54mm.

This is correct. 045 plain=50mm (non-pinned 'floating' 1mm rings). 045 'AV'=52mm (pinned 1.5mm rings, as are all subsequent models). 045 Super=54mm. 056 'AV'=52mm. 056 Super=54mm (but with 'swept' transfer ports). 056 Magnum=54mm (but with 'swept' transfer ports and larger exhaust port). 056 Magnum II=56mm (non-'swept' transfers).
