Finally took the plunge lastnite and muffler modded my 036.
I took it apart and drilled 3 10.5 mm holes in the front of the baffle and enlarged the accessable existing holes.
Then drilled a 16mm on the side of the removable front part and cut up a new makita strimmer scrench (16mm id) 45deg for the inside and square for the exit.
Then i MIG/MAG welded it on put it all back together, But as it was 11pm thought better of a trial run.
I tried it today i was suprised how high the idle was! Then adjusted the carb (by ear no tach yet) and went found a few beech logs
WOW it cuts way better and is'nt even that loud!
Thanks guys for the inspiration

Are your saws of US origin?

I've read plenty muffler mod threads, but I've never considered doing any as I've always assumed UK saws aren't restricted in the same way the EPA makes em do it in the US?

There was never a saw made that didnt benefit from a muffler mod.

Well maybe my Homelite Zip, it has no muffler at all

Hi the 036 025 and 451e are all uk saws the 280 is usa and the rancher canadian
the original exhaust outlet is tiny compared to port size i would guess maybe 25% if even that much!
i would say the restriction was holding back the saw a fair bit. the chain was running all the time after the mod so i guess it was breathing so much easier that the idle went up.
the 036 is wearing a 20" bar and 3/8th chain
i was cutting about 18" beech out of the log pile and could push down on the saw instead of just letting gravity do the work im well chuffed!

What does that mean? Are you speaking ol' Gaelic or sumpin? :)

Ian

LOL common phrase over here just means happy :)
and as for Gaelic its an old language that they should just let die.
half of it's in english now anyway as they havn't bothered to update the language with new words for anything modern

Chain running all the time means the saw is running lean due to better breathing ability. Be sure you adjust both Hi and Lo mixtures (then the idle) or you might fry a piston.
